Is it possible to score online portfolios for multiple traits (rather than holistically)?

Is it possible to analyze the qualities of writing with quantitative measures?

Is it possible to achieve validity and reliability in portfolio assessment?

At New Jersey Institute of Technology, we have created a model for assessment with the analytic scoring of online portfolios (we score for ten independent variables and one holistic overall portfolio score). This assessment process has resulted in a database of detailed information about various aspects of our curriculum. We then use this data to improve our technical writing course on a cyclic basis. This website provides information about using this model and information for teachers of English 352 at NJIT.

This is program assessment, not assessment of individual students or individual instructors. The goal of the assessment is to make program evaluation an integral part of the teaching cycle– this assures that teachers communicate with each other and the course is continually evaluated and updated. We hold a half-day assessment at the end of every semester.
