| (August 18 through August 23, 2003)
International students
receiving financial awards in their first year at New Jersey
Institute of Technology from the Office of Graduate Studies
are required to attend the NJIT Teaching and Communication
Skills Workshop. Their individual departments will be
informed of their participation. The workshop takes place
from Monday, August 18, through Friday, August 22, 2003.
This workshop is only for
students receiving a financial award. Its main purpose is to
help strengthen the communications skills needed as
teaching assistants, graduate assistants, research
assistants, or faculty assistants. The workshop also serves
as a practical orientation to higher education in the United
States.
Students attending the workshop
in the past have found it very helpful. The workshop gives
information to help students succeed at NJIT. They meet with
other award recipients, faculty, experienced teaching
assistants, undergraduates, and members of the
administration. They practice techniques to help them
communicate effectively in an English language environment.
The workshop participants stay
free of charge at a student residence hall on campus for the
duration of the workshop. (The room charges are waived only
for those students who attend the entire workshop.) They can
arrive at the residence hall one or two days before the
workshop begins if they need to. They also receive all meals
free of charge during the five days of the workshop. |
