My research agenda revolves around the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), in particular the convergence of the SOA with other Enterprise IT best practices, such as Business Process Management (BPM) and Model Driven Architecture (MDA). I am presently completing 3 major research projects, with papers to be submitted this year.
Business Services Networks (BSNs) are IT infrastructure intermediaries or hubs to provision applications on a pay-per-use basis. They facilitate inter-enterprise systems integration through component reuse, leveraging Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) standards such as Web Services and Business Process Execution Language (BPEL). BSNs allow software vendors to launch Service Oriented Computing (SOC) ventures to provision their software with an On Demand business model. They also provide business adopters with a fast and easy way to implement an SOA by reusing external components. In this paper, we review the cases of 5 leading BSNs and discuss the key issues of both SOC ventures and SOA adopters in selling and/or using On Demand applications.
The Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) provides a rich development environment to perform information, application, process, and infrastructure integration, and develop applications more rapidly by reusing existing software assets. As such, the SOA can inherit and build upon the tools and methods of related approaches to integration and software engineering. We propose a new model for the Service-Oriented Development of Applications (SODA), integrating 7 key enterprise IT practices and standards into a coherent methodology and toolbox to develop Service Oriented Business Applications (SOBA). We relate the SOA to such technologies as Enterprise Architecture (EA), Business Process Management (BPM), Model Driven Architecture (MDA), Event Driven Architecture (EDA), Semantic Web, Grid Computing, and Business Services Networks (BSN). We conclude with an outline of our model as a set of SODA capabilities, blending the tools and methods of these enterprise technologies with those of the SOA.
Developed by the Object Management Group (OMG), the Model Driven Architecture (MDA) is a standard allowing software developers to automatically produce more than 90% of the source code directly from software models. To be effective, model-driven developers must source, merge, and transform various models (e.g., class, sequence, workflow, etc.) from other software and systems development methodologies. For that purpose, the OMG has partnered with the Open Group and the Integration Consortium to merge the MDA with 2 leading systems development methodologies, The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) and the Total Business Integration (TBI) methodology. As IC representatives on this joint OMG-OG-IC Working Group, our mandate is to translate these standards into the Model-Driven Enterprise Architecture and Integration Methodology (MDEAIM, pronounced “Medium”). We use the open source version of the Rational Unified Process (RUP) and the Eclipse RUP Plugin Development Toolkit to develop the new methodology. As such, we propose a new set of core disciplines, workflows, activities, roles, artefacts, and development tools, all integrated within a Unified Process implementing the MDEAIM. We conclude with a roadmap to help IT vendors and enterprise developers adopt, adapt, and implement this new methodology and its process toolkit.
