Online Backups
Online backups of AFS user accounts are normally done between 3 AM and
4 AM daily; the contents of the online backup are a snapshot of user
directories (accounts), including course and project directories, taken
between 3 AM and 4 AM.
These online backups are read-only: nothing in them can be modified.
However, the owner of the backup can read any file in it, and copy
any file in it to another location.
The AFS permissions in the online backup are exactly the same as in the
account that is the source of the backup. AFS permissions
Online backups do NOT count against a user's AFS disk quota.
Online backups are automatically made available to users via the read-only
directory BACKUP.<username>-DD.MM.YYYY in the user's login
(home) directory.
Note:
- A directory listing of BACKUP.<username>-DD.MM.YYYY may
display a line of the form:
BACKUP.<username>.<some.date>: No such file or directory
This is the result of a "stale" reference, and can be safely ignored.
- If a user's account is over-quota, the BACKUP.<username>-DD.MM.YYYY
directory cannot be placed in the user's login directory.
- Files or directories created and then deleted between consecutive
on-line backups are not recoverable.
