Welcome Letter
What to Do Before Class for CIS677 Spring 2002 (Distance Section)

Hi Everyone and Welcome to CIS677!

CIS677 is a great course. It's a lot of work, but you should get a lot out of the course.

Before Classes Start

(1) In preparation for class you need to get an account on NJIT's Virtual Classroom system, WebBoard. This is how we all will communicate across the semester.

To get an account and register in the class conference, follow the instructions at: http://ccsweb.njit.edu/~bieber/CIS677S02/webboard.html

(2) Check out any getting-started comments in the "General Admin" and "General Admin - Distance Sections" conferences.

(3) Follow all the instructions given by Distance Learning regarding the textbook, CD-ROM and all other organizational and administrative aspects of the course. The website for distance learning is: http://cpe.njit.edu/current/

Text, CD-ROM and Course Pack

We will be using the following text book:

Zwass, Vladimir, Foundations of Information Systems, 4th Edition, Irwin/McGraw-Hill, 1998.

It's a bit old, but the consensus is that it is the best one around!

You can purchase the CD-ROM and the textbook by following the instructions at Distance Learning's Web site, or you can purchase them directly from the bookstore. You also can purchase the text from NJIT's bookstore.

All materials on the CD-ROM are also available on-line, but the video quality of the CD far surpasses the video quality on the Web, so the price of the CD-ROM is worth it!

We also will have a large set of articles to read. You can download and print these out yourself, or you can purchase a pre-printed course pack and save yourself a lot of time and ink :-)

Currently the course pack is available at Affordable Copies near the Rutgers Newark Campus for $51.50 (including binding). You should call to reserve a copy and give them time to print it up. Note that it will have a prior semester title page. That is OK. I'll post any updates on the course Web Site.

Affordable Copies Center
49 Halsey Street, Newark. (It's parallel and next to Washington Ave. and between New St. and Bleeker St.)
Tel: 973-802-1007
Open hours: Mon-Fri 9:00-6:00, Sat 10:00-5:00

In addition to getting the course pack from Affordable Copies near campus, you can get the course pack from Sir Speedy by faxing the form on the course Web site. Sir Speedy will ship it to distance students for an additional charge. Affordable does not ship. You can contact Sir Speedy with any questions: (973) 242-4040

Class Preview

Read the syllabus at: http://ccsweb.njit.edu/~bieber/CIS677S02/syllabus-dl.html

Read the schedule to get a feel for how class will proceed each week: http://ccsweb.njit.edu/~bieber/CIS677S02/schedule-dl.html Don't worry if it seems overwhelming right now - we'll be easing into it and it will become second nature as we get into things :-)

All class materials will be posted on the class web site: http://ccsweb.njit.edu/~bieber/CIS677S02.

Once Classes Begin

All instructions for the course will be on the class web pages and in WebBoard.  Make sure you keep up with your assignments and enter WebBoard regularly to enter class discussions.

Exam Information

I will post information about the final exam in the first few weeks of the course. Please wait with any arrangements regarding proctors until I tell you the details. There will be no midterm.

And again, Welcome!

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone on-line and working with you this semester.
