At NJIT we are emphasizing academic integrity. "Plagiarism" or copying other people's work without giving credit is morally wrong and unacceptable. We are now checking everyone's work through the Turnitin system to emphasize the importance of doing original work and giving credit where credit is due.
We hope no one is insulted by using such a service. You have a right to be disappointed and disturbed by the need for us to use such a service. Many of your professors and school administrators are both disappointed and disturbed by this need. However, we have had several cases in the past where students have plagiarized and broken their trust with their peers. This is one tool we have determined will help reduce cheating.
Note that the "help" option is context-sensitive and available pretty much on every page. Clicking on "help" also gives you a link to a user manual. Turnitin's Web site also has a tutorial available.
Here are the instructions for registering with turnitin.com for our class. If you follow these instructions, you will not have to pay to use this service. NJIT has a license allowing all students to use it for their classes.
When you submit an assignment, you will have 24 hours to make changes. After that, it will be evaluated for copied materials and sent to your instructor.
Note that your professor will be able to see the text that you enter, along with a full comparative report comparing it to any similar materials Turnitin finds on the World Wide Web or in any archived reports.
