Specialized Expertise

The elective portion of the MS-PTC program allows students to specialize in selected areas of professional and technical communication. For the Summer 2007 semester, I enrolled in a Flash animation elective. Visual presentation of information is a key component of the MS-PTC program. Several animation/graphic examples, along with a heuristic evaluation of the NJIT Web site, appear below.

Graphics: The ability to convey information visually is a critical skill in any media-related field. Through on-the-job training and independent research, I have become familiar with a litany of graphics software packages (Photoshop, Visio, Illustrator). The Graphics page showcases some of the technical graphics I have created throughout my academic and professional career.

VoIP vs. Traditional Telephone Calls (44KB SWF - must have Flash-enabled Web browser): Independently-produced Flash movie that describes the differences between traditional long distance telephone calls and Voice over IP (VoIP) phone calls. All aspects of this animation were developed with Flash software.

MP3 Compression (20MB AVI): Custom animation that explains how MP3 compression works. All animation in this file was generated with screen capture software.

Cascading Style Sheets: Adobe Dreamweaver was used to create an HTML-based tutorial that explains how to generate a PDF file from a Microsoft Word source file. The layout, color scheme and navigation of the tutorial are controlled by a single CSS file.

Heuristic Evaluation of NJIT Web Site (1.7MB PDF): In the Spring of 2006, NJIT hired a consulting company to overhaul the design of the NJIT Web site. The heuristic evaluation examines the usability of the updated Web site.
