This
piece originates in a series of acrostic poems created by transcribing
words heard in a lecture given by Elizabeth Shultz followed by readings
from Moby Dick by Chinese students at the Reading for the Millennium
conference in Beijing, October 2001. (Shultz is wearing a purple scarf
in the center of the middle row in the photograph below). The words in
the original poems
were recorded sequentially during the course of the evening's events. A
computer process - in the form of a php (database) program written by George
Taylor - renders these words
and poems at random.
