Course description: Follow up of Eng 353, explores information structuring via digital media, and how computer technology has influenced the ways in which information is presented in contemporary culture. Through guided interactive research, presents information for technical, commercial, and artistic use. Projects involve use of HTML editors, NJIT networks, and graphical and animation software.

Attendance is mandatory. Missing more than one class will harm your final grade.

Students who have laptops are encouraged to bring them to class.

January-February: Introductions, course overview, server space setup. Discussion of WWW publishing, design philosophy. Introduction to Dreamweaver (basics of the program, linking tools, publishing and design processes such as incorporating media, frames, css). Introduction to Flash (incorporating media, text, animation, interactivity).

Projects due by March 7:

1: Using skills acquired in ENG 353, and your own instinctive/intuitive design response to the WWW, create a new NJIT personal homepage, which will be reversioned over the course of the semester. Save .html file of each version of your index. [aim to complete by 2/1; 10 points]

2: Design and create an autobiographical hypertext narrative using a series of interconnected WWW pages (using any design approach). [aim to complete by 2/8; 10 points]

3: Create a basic 30 second animation. [aim to complete by 2/15; 10 points]

4: Create an interactive (hyperlinked) animation. [aim to complete by 2/29; 10 points]

5: Students will work collaboratively to re-version ENG 353 publications. [aim to complete by 3/7; 10 points]

NO CLASS MARCH 14 (SPRING BREAK)

March-April: Gather and Assemble Portfolio [15 points], Project materials [15 points] and participate in the construction of Newark Review 3.0 [10 points].

Projects may involve student participation in the editing and design of Newark Review 3.0

Both are WWW-based, should include hypermedia and animation, and be based on individual interests.

April 25 (Last class meeting) STUDENT PROJECT & PORTFOLIO REVIEW

All course materials must be posted online for grading by May 2.
