attend, was recognized for leadership in knowledge representation and
reasoning in computer science and artificial intelligence.

- Dr. Richard V. Snyder, of Kinnelon, NJ, and President of RS Microwave,
Inc., Butler, NJ, was presented with the William Terry Distinguished
Lifetime Service Award from Howard Michel, Region 1 Director for a
lifetime of sustained, dedicated and wide-ranging service to the IEEE at
the Section, Society, and Chapters levels. Shown to his left are
daughter Noelle and wife Valerie.

- John R. Redmon, of West Orange, NJ, was presented with the PES Chapter
Outstanding Engineer Award from Ron Quade, PES Chapter Chair, for
outstanding leadership and contributions in the design, operation,
performance and reliability of electric power systems.

- Ken Oexle, Chairman, of Whippany, NJ, and Won Kim, Vice Chairman, of
Hillside, NJ, of the North Jersey
Industrial Applications Society Chapter, were recognized with the
Industrial Applications Society Large Chapter Award from Charles
Rubenstein, Region 1 Director Elect.

- Dr. Paul A. Polakos, of Lucent Technology in Murray Hill, NJ, was
presented with an IEEE Region I Award from Kirit Dixit, North Jersey
Section Chairman, for outstanding leadership in the field of advanced
wireless communications.

- Amit Patel, with ITT, Nutley, NJ, was presented with an IEEE Region I
Award from Kirit Dixit, North Jersey Section Chairman, for outstanding
leadership and sustained contributions to the Graduates of the Last
Decade (GOLD) activities within Region I and the North Jersey Section.

- Russell C. Pepe, Vice President, Advanced Technical Marketing (ATM),
Parsippany, NJ, currently serving as the Section Secretary, was
presented with an IEEE Region I Award from Kirit Dixit, North Jersey
Section Chairman, for outstanding service within the MTT/AP Chapter and
within the Student Branches.

- Richard Tax, Chairman, of River Vale, NJ and Paul Ward, Vice Chairman,
of Totowa, NJ, of the Professional Activities Committee of Engineers,
were presented with the Region I Alex Gruenwald Award from Howard
Michel, Region 1 Director, which comes with a $ 1,000.00 donation to the
Section. This is the tenth time since 1987 that the North Jersey Section
has been awarded this award. Richard Tax spoke about Alex Gurenwald and
why the PACE Award was named for him.

- Thomas A. Edison West Orange Laboratories and Factories, 1887
Thomas Alva Edison, a West Orange resident from 1886 until his
death in
1931, established his final and most comprehensive laboratory and
factory
complex about one-half mile (0.8 km) north of here in 1887.
Edison's
visionary combination in one organization of basic and applied
research,
development, and manufacturing became the prototype for
industrial
enterprises worldwide. Work here resulted in more than half
of Edison's
1,093 patents.
