NJ Consultants' Network:

Web Marketing for the Independent Professional

On Thursday, May 24, 2007, the IEEE Consultants' Network of Northern NJ is pleased to present ” Web Marketing for the Independent Professional”, by Mike Moran.

About the Talk

It's not easy being a consultant.  You must keep your clients happy.  You have to keep up with your field of expertise.  You must collect your bills.  Who has the time or money for marketing?

Few successful consultants make it without some kind of marketing.  In the old days, it was a good resume and who you knew, but today, you need a Web site--a good Web site.  And you need to know how to get attention for your Web site.  It may seem overwhelming or beyond your budget, but it doesn't have to be.

The good news about Web marketing is that it doesn't have to break your bank.  Free or low-cost hosting of blogs, Web sites, podcasts and videos give you ways to get your marketing message out.  Search marketing takes some time, but not much money.  Find out how to create a Web site that conveys the image you want and delivers the message prospective clients need to hear.  Learn how Web marketing can set you apart among the sea of consultants looking for engagements.

About the Speaker

Mike Moran is an IBM Distinguished Engineer who has worked on the Web since its inception, including eight years at ibm.com where he most recently was Manager of Web User Experience.  Mike is currently a Product Manager for OmniFind, IBM's enterprise search product, and is an expert in search marketing--co-author of the best-selling book Search Engine Marketing, Inc., columnist for Revenue magazine and WebProNews.  His new book on Internet marketing, Do It Wrong Quickly, will be available in September.  Mike can be reached at his Web site (mikemoran.com), which is also home to his Biznology newsletter and blog.

NJ EDS/C&S & MTT-S/AP-S Chapters:

Global Stability Analysis and Stabilization of Power Amplifiers

On April 25, 2007, the IEEE NJ Section Electron Devices, Circuits and Systems Chapters together with MTT/S/AP-S and the New Jersey Institute of Technology will host a talk on “Global Stability Analysis and Stabilization of Power Amplifiers."  The speaker will be Professor Almudena Suarez.

About the Talk

Power amplifiers often exhibit instabilities giving rise to frequency division by two or oscillations at incommensurate frequencies.  These phenomena, observed from a certain level of input power, cannot be detected through a small-signal stability analysis of the circuit.  Instead, a large-signal stability analysis must be performed.  Other behaviors, like hysteresis and chaotic solutions, can also be obtained when the input power is varied.  The qualitative changes in the output-power spectrum are due to bifurcations or qualitative stability changes in the circuit solution or in the number of solutions when the parameter is varied.  The talk introduces the local and global stability concepts and the analysis techniques, based on harmonic balance.  The first objective is to allow a good comprehension of the different phenomena.  The second objective is to provide practical simulation tools for an efficient prediction and elimination of the undesired behavior.  Different approaches for the local-stability analysis of nonlinear regimes will be presented, with emphasis on the pole-zero identification.  Then, techniques will be shown for the detection of the most common types of bifurcations in power amplifiers.  The final goal will be the stabilization of the circuit and the design corrections in order to suppress the undesired phenomena will also be presented.

For illustration, the simulation tools will be applied to two different switching amplifiers developed at California Institute of Technology.  These amplifiers have remarkably high efficiency, but in intermediate input-power range they exhibited different undesired phenomena.  The first amplifier is a Class-E/F amplifier, which showed oscillations, hysteresis and chaos.  The second amplifier is a Class-E amplifier, which showed jumps in the power transfer curve and sideband noise amplification.  After the application of the different techniques, the two amplifiers were globally stabilized for all the expected operating values of the amplifier bias voltage and input power.  This was achieved with negligible degradation of the amplifier performance, in terms of output power and drain efficiency.  The stable behavior obtained in simulation was experimentally confirmed.

NJ LEOS Chapter:

Electronic Conducting States in Nano- and Mesoscale Molecular Devices

On April 12, 2007, the IEEE NJ Lasers And Electro-Optics Chapter together with the Electronic Imaging Center at NJIT will host a talk on “Electronic Conducting States in Nano- and Mesoscale Molecular Devices."  The speaker will be Professor Nikolai Zhitenev.

About the Talk

Organic materials can offer new electronic functionality not available in the inorganic devices.  However, the integration of organics within nanoscale electronic circuitry poses new challenges for material physics, chemistry and nanofabrication.  I will discuss different approaches to engineer useful electronic properties in small molecular devices.  In the first case, the electronic functionality is to be provided by the backbones of short molecules.  We have developed a set of fabrication and characterization techniques allowing us to build devices with self-assembled monolayers from nearly single-molecule size up to ~300 nm on a side.  In the second approach, we build devices with monolayers of macromolecules.  The electronic properties are determined by the composition, the chemical conversions and electric-field-induced chemical reactions of the side groups.

About the Speaker

Nikolai Zhitenev received the MSc degree in physics from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Russia, and the PhD degree in condensed matter physics from the Institute of Solid State Physics, Russia, in 1991.  From 1993-1995, he visited at the Max-Planck Institute for Solid State Physics, Stuttgart, Germany as Alexander von Humboldt research fellow.  From 1995-1998, he worked at MIT, Cambridge, MA.  Since 1998, he has been at Bell Labs.  His research is centered on electronic properties of novel materials in nanoscale devices.

Engineers Meet:  Contract Engineering, aka job shopping - An Alternate Form of Employment

On Wednesday, April 11, 2007, the North Jersey Section Professional Activities Committee and Graduates of the Last Decade will meet to discuss contracting engineering and the job market.  Bob Glynn and Paul Lorenzen will be our guest speakers from a local contract firm.

They will present their views about contract work and the job market, and be available to answer questions from the audience.  An informative article about Contract Engineering can be found at http://www.aea.org/pdf/Contract_Engineering_07.pdf.

About the Meeting

One of our most successful meetings is being repeated.  This meeting will bring you face to face with a representative from one of the local contract firms.  Attendees will have an opportunity to discuss contract engineering, the relationship between the contract firm, client company and the contract engineer.

Topics include: the current state of the employment market for engineers, resource tools for advertising, your availability, dealing with job shops - do's and don'ts.  Networking - it is a contact sport, accepting positions far from home.  Why this is something everyone should consider.  How sending jobs offshore and importing foreign workers under the H-1B and L1 legislation have affected the business.

This meeting is NOT a job fair.  Resumes can be e-mailed at a later date, but will not be necessary for the meeting.

You are encouraged to attend and bring your spouse and associates.

This is especially of interest to students, recent graduates and those looking to increase job opportunities.

About the Speakers

Bob Glynn and Paul Lorenzen of HEPCO will be our guest speakers.  They are involved in all aspects of the Company with particular focus on client marketing.

HEPCO is a thirty-one year old company, headquartered in Rutherford, New Jersey and currently serving clients in twenty-two states, with the balance of their work being done in the Connecticut to Virginia area.  Their strategic hiring focus is across the entire spectrum of the engineering disciplines.  This includes the major disciplines such as civil, electrical, environmental, and mechanical as well as subsets of these disciplines such as administrators, estimators, designers, facilities, inspectors, planners, reliability, safety, schedulers, stress analysts, and structural engineers.  HEPCO provides their clients with both direct hires and consultants, who will work on a specific client project as HEPCO employees until that project is completed

Today’s business processes (or workflows) are characterized by global, dynamic, uncertain and error-prone environments.  In order to compete in such contexts, enterprises need to effectively stay adaptable to environmental and internal changes, constantly reconsider and optimize business processes, and rapidly develop new services and products to support evolving business.  Domain knowledge modeling provides an invaluable means to capture and represent the business conditions from prior experiences and inherent expertise.  However, the knowledge-based approaches are dependent on very time-consuming knowledge acquisition and modeling processes, and maintaining the knowledge model itself to keep up with the rapid changing environment is very challenging.  On the other hand, data driven approaches automatically acquire new knowledge patterns from historical log data through data mining and machine learning techniques.  Such automatically derived knowledge then can be used to refine and augment the domain knowledge, to intelligently enable workflow automation, and to improve the quality and efficiency of the process.  But most of the existing data-driven approaches do not take any “legacy” (pre-existing) domain knowledge into account, which inherently reduce their efficiency in discovering meaningful knowledge.  Therefore, the integration of domain knowledge and data-driven approaches not only leverages the strength of each methodology, but also enables an enterprise to adapt to changing conditions throughout the entire workflow lifecycle: workflow modeling, analysis, deployment, automation, and transformation.  In this talk, Dr. Sun will discuss the research work in developing such an integrated platform for an adaptive workflow system that supports Xerox pre-sale/post-sale services, workflow solutions, and products in digital production printing environment.

About the Speaker

Dr. Tong Sun is a Principal Scientist of Document Workflows & Services Lab at Xerox Innovation Group, Webster, New York.  Since joining Xerox in 1995, she has not only worked on innovative research and advanced prototype development, but also successfully transferred several research technologies into Xerox products.  Her research interests include semantic web technology, ontology modeling, operational intelligence, workflow modeling and management, machine learning, and data mining.  She has published 16 scientific papers in prestigious conferences and journals and has 10 US patents pending.  She has also served as Industry Track Chair, Special Session Chair, Guest Journal Editor, and Program Committee Member in various conferences.  She holds a Bachelor and Master degree in Electrical Engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China, as well as a PhD in Computer Engineering from the University of Rhode Island.
