NJ Consultant’s Network:

Buffet Dinner and Annual Planning Meeting

On December 8, 2010, the IEEE Consultants' Network of Northern NJ will host a networking dinner and its annual Planning Meeting.

About the Meeting

The combined November/December meeting of the IEEE Consultants' Network is intended to be a strategic planning event for Network members and for consultants who are considering membership in the Network.

The main purpose of the meeting is to discuss ideas and expectations for the various Network functions in the upcoming year.  Results of the annual election of officers will be announced at the time.

This working session is traditionally an open, informal forum to determine what the IEEE-CNNNJ is doing right or wrong.  The floor will be open to suggestions for improvements, recommendations of new Network directions and activities and proposals of new feature topics for the general meetings.

This year we continued implementing changes in our organization and in the scope of its activities.  The discussion will evaluate  the effect of these changes and will chart the course for 2011.

Certain major functions performed by the IEEE Consultants' Network are always open to reconsideration and to continuing input.  These include:

·      Focus of our group: publicity efforts and  member networking

·      Group marketing & image building - CNNNJ website and alternate publicity                   methods

·      Monthly general meetings - suggested feature topics

·      Alternate general meeting formats

The December meeting is open to all.   Non-members, who are interested in our activities or who are considering joining the group, are strongly encouraged to participate in the planning session to gain in-depth insight into our organization.

The meeting will commence with a dinner, which is open to all.  Please see details of the venue, schedule and dinner cost, below.

Meeting Venue

This December, we will meet for dinner, followed by our planning meeting, in the Olive Restaurant at the Parsippany Hilton, located off Route 10 West in Parsippany, NJ.  The restaurant is situated on the south side of main atrium.

Although not required, all attendees are strongly encouraged to participate in the pre-meeting networking dinner, to avail themselves of the opportunity to socialize and acquaint with members of our organization.  Your presence at the dinner will help ensure the Network’s ability to continue holding future events at the Hilton.  Depending on the expected number of participants, the restaurant will provide either a dinner buffet for only $30 per person or menu selections at similar prices.

Since seating is limited, we ask that you contact us as soon as possible to reserve a seat, even if not participating in the dinner.

Registration Open for Two “Soft Skill” Courses in 2011

At IEEE, we recognize that that much of your engineering work involves writing or presenting information to people (end users, marketing executives) who don't have your technical expertise.  Thanks to recent requests from many IEEE members, we are launching two "soft skills" courses this year on improving your written communications and presentation skills.  Please review the descriptions in this newsletter for content, schedules and dates.

The first course "Improving Your Writing Skills – Tips & Techniques" will be offered over four weeks on Wednesdays - January 5, 12, 19 and 26.   http://meetings.vtools.ieee.org/meeting_view/list_meeting/4271

The second course "Developing Your Presentation Skills – Tips & Techniques" will be offered over four weeks on Wednesdays -- February 2, 9, 16, and 23. http://meetings.vtools.ieee.org/meeting_view/list_meeting/4273

Classes will run from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM.  See registrations forms for details or register online at the above links.

These courses will be held at DeVry University, 630 U.S. Highway One, North Brunswick NJ 07902-3362.  For any questions, contact North Jersey GOLD chair Larry Yang at yangl “AT” ieee.org.

Additionally, many folks have requested CEU/PDU credits for these courses.  Both courses qualify for either 1.0 CEUs or 10 PDUs and are available at an additional cost of just $25 more per course.  Both courses emphasize individualized instruction with a small class size (22 attendees maximum).

IEEE Life Members Hear About the Renovated Edison West Orange Labs

At their annual luncheon on October 28th, IEEE Life Members heard a presentation about the completed renovations at the legendary Thomas Edison Labs in West Orange.  The talk was given by IEEE Senior Member Harry T. Roman, [PSE&G retiree] who works at the Edison Innovation Foundation, and also lectures and volunteers at the Thomas Edison National Historical Park (TENHP).  The Edison Innovation Foundation raises money for the site and it’s programs/new projects; champions the Edison legacy; and, also reaches out to teachers and students to spur interest in the great inventor, and promote careers in science, technology and engineering.

The $20 million, 5-year renovation [2004-2009] included significant renovations to both the historic labs and the Edison home [Glenmont] in Llewellyn Park.  Since its opening in October 2009, over 70,000 visitors have toured the facilities.  Some salient points of Roman’s program emphasized:

1) The Labs now have 2 new floors open to the public including Edison’s private lab on the second floor along with the fine machine shop and experimental stations and drafting/engineering areas.  The third floor contains his recording studios, photo shops, and a large selection of his phonographs and general displays showing his other inventions.

2) The general chemistry lab building is now available for tours as well.  Here Edison performed some of his famous artificial rubber experiments, the last big project before his death.

3) The Black Maria movie studio has been redone with a new outside coating of protective shingles, and a re-done interior floor; and is available for limited tours and activities.

4) The Edison home at Glenmont contains a new geothermal heating and cooling system, as well as a fire protection system.  Two-full floors of rooms may be toured as limited basement tours of the geothermal system are also available.  Plans for the renovation of the third floor are underway.

5) A new education building has also been dedicated.  Building #11 has been brought back from the Dearborn MI Ford village.  It was loaned to that site in 1940 and returned to West Orange three years ago and completely re-assembled at its former location.  The building is a hands-on teaching facility and lecture hall for special visits and programs.

6) The Edison garage and its vehicles are next on the restoration list.  It contains the original Edison electric vehicle charging station, vintage family electric vehicles and the personal car of Charles Edison, son of Thomas Edison and former governor of New Jersey.  Also included in the collection is a working 1922 Ford Model T given to Edison as a gift from Henry Ford.

Edison was in reality a premier project manager whose great ability to build inter-disciplinary project teams led to the formation of what today we call R&D labs.  It was the culmination of his invention factory concept—probably his greatest invention.  This year, US companies and the federal government will spend 370 billion on R&D directed at developing new products, services, and industries.

TENHP is reaching out to teachers, students, and professionals to bring Edison back into the public view.  TIME magazine ran its July 2010 issue as a special dedicated to Edison and his relevance to the modern world.  The Foundation has recently developed a variety of educational teacher resource books for the classroom, discussing alternate energy technologies and invention.  Here are some fast facts about the TENHP site:

·      400,000 artifacts

·      48,000 sound recordings

·      60,000 photographic images

·      5,000,000 written documents (including 4,000 lab notebooks)

·      10,000 volumes in the laboratory library

·      Half of Edison’s 1093 patents were gained at West Orange.

TENHP is the largest and most complete technological museum on the planet.

The Labs may be toured on Wednesday thru Sunday, 9-5; and Glenmont on Friday thru Sunday, 11:30-5.  For more information contact www.nps.gov/edis, 973-736-0550 ext. 11.  The entrance fee is $7, under age 16 is free.  Group tours may be arranged at ext. 29.

Check out the Foundation websites at www.thomasedison.org and www.edisonmuckers.org

NEWS from IEEE-USA:

Cybersecurity a Shared Responsibility, White House Advisor Says at IEEE Homeland Security Conference

Waltham, Mass. (9 November 2010) - It's not just government and private technology companies that are responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable functioning of our world's interconnected computer systems.

"When it comes to cybersecurity, everyone has a role to play," said Howard A. Schmidt, national cybersecurity coordinator and special assistant to President Barack Obama via video message Monday to attendees at the 2010 IEEE International Conference on Technologies for Homeland Security.

The 10th-annual peer-reviewed technical conference began Monday at the Westin Waltham Boston and continues through Wednesday.

Schmidt said there are steps we all can take to help keep the Internet secure:  don't visit suspect Web sites, download suspicious documents or attachments, or open e-mails from people you don't know; have regularly updated anti-virus software installed on your computer, back-up your files frequently and educate children about potential online dangers.

"Together we can build a more resilient international community that is stronger and smarter than the determined adversaries we face every day," he said. "Everyone has a role to secure their part of cyberspace, including the computers, devices and networks they use.  We all need to understand how our individual actions can have a collective impact on cybersecurity and protecting the Internet."

Much of the world depends on computer networks to communicate and conduct business.  If those networks are compromised through viruses and other cyber attacks, the consequences could be deadly.  For example, if computer-controlled street signals were to suddenly malfunction, vehicles could crash into each other.

"We rely on cyber networks to control and manage transportation, electricity and banking, just to name a few parts of our critical infrastructure," Schmidt said.  "Cybersecurity risks pose some of the most serious economic and national security challenges of the 21st century.  Going forward, economic prosperity and our way of life depends on strong cybersecurity built on the backbone of resilient cyber infrastructure."

The IEEE Homeland Security Conference is produced by IEEE with technical support from the Department of Homeland Security Science & Technology Directorate, the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society and the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society.  IEEE-USA is providing organizational support.  For more information, visit www.ieee-hst.org.

IEEE (www.ieee.org) is the world's largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.  It supports the professional interests of more than 395,000 members worldwide.

IEEE-USA (www.ieeeusa.org) advances the public good and promotes the careers and public policy interests of more than 210,000 engineers, scientists and allied professionals who are U.S. members of IEEE.
