About
the Talk
Medical
device design is an exercise in optimization with the goal of achieving the
device with best effectiveness. This
optimization process is constrained by safety, reliability and
manufacturability requirements, and failure to satisfy these may limit the success
of the product to the insides of an academic laboratory. In this talk, I will describe the origin and
the content of these constraints as well as discuss the state of the medical
device industry in general.

1)
"the state of the IEEE," i.e., a report on how IEEE is doing with
respect to membership, conferences, publications, standards, finances, and
other activities; what the major threats and opportunities are, and
2)
what 2009 President-elect Vig would like to accomplish during his term in
2009. He has a long "to-do"
list. However, his term is only one
year, and the president's powers are limited.
Nevertheless, he will discuss what he wishes to improve in IEEE, and ask
the audience's advice about the prioritization of his goals.

On
June 30, 2008, the IEEE NJ Signal Processing Chapter together with the New
Jersey Institute of Technology will host a talk on “Pairwise Kernel-Based
Learning Approach to Intelligent Search and Data Mining." The speaker will be Professor S. Y. Kung of
Princeton University.
The pairwise approach
represents a promising new research direction.
It is more than just replacing the distance-matrix by a similarity score
or a nonlinear kernel. What kind of
similarity scores are most effective depends closely on the given
applications. They fall into three
categories: (1) vector data, (2)
time-series or sequence data, (3) direct (text- or keyword-based)
approach. As motivation, some potential
applications for media processing and bioinformatics will be highlighted.
In this talk, we shall look into some prominent unsupervised
learning (PCA, K-means, SOM, tree) and supervised learning (Fisher, SVM)
techniques. We shall compare their
conventional and kernel-based variants.
In addition, we shall illuminate the role of the Mercer condition and
introduce a solution when the condition is not met. For this, the notions of kernelization and
vectorization will be introduced and compared.
To extend the application domain, we shall further divide the
supervised learning into two different categories: (1) (regular) supervised and (2)
self-supervised scenarios. Many signal
and media processing applications naturally arise in self-supervised
formulation. For this, we shall
introduce a vector-index-adaptive SVM (VIA-SVM), which is based on the fact
that the support vectors can be subdivided into different groups each offering
quite distinct prediction performance.
Simulation studies confirm that the prediction can be significantly
improved by VIA-SVM, especially after it is combined with relevance (e.g. SNR)
and redundancy information inherent in the self-supervised formulation.

The
second annual joint Region 1 Student Activities, Graduates of the Last Decade
(GOLD) and Women in Engineering (WIE) conference was held on Saturday April 26,
2008 at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, NJ. This conference marks the second year this
event was held and it coincides with the student paper contest and micromouse
competitions held annually.
This
year's host university, Fairleigh Dickinson, who also hosted last year's
competition and conference provided the venue for students and GOLD/WIE members
from around Region 1 to meet for a variety of activities that occurred over two
days.
The
conference opened with a networking reception, held the night before on Friday,
April 25 from 6 to 9 pm. This event
allowed students and visiting members to interact before the next day's formal
activities over light refreshments in an informal setting. It also gave an excellent opportunity to test
their skills and win some prizes. Two
different puzzle game challenges were played and the winners received gift
cards.
The
next day was the formal program which was composed of parallel tracks of
activities. The three main tracks were
the student activities track, the GOLD/WIE training and professional
development track, and the Career and Information Fair track. After opening welcome remarks, the student
paper contest got underway as well as the day long Career and Information
Fair. The GOLD/WIE track started with
and introduction to IEEE and GOLD/WIE affinity group leadership training.
The
afternoon had the formal micromouse competition after morning trial
sessions. The afternoon also hosted a
variety of seminars on different topics devoted to professional
development. This included information
about a professional skills development guide, information about how to go
about starting your own technology company, and making critical decisions at the
beginning of your career.
The
Career and Information fair featured a number of booths and exhibits from
different local universities, IEEE organizations, and corporations looking to
hire summer interns or full-time graduates. The exhibits were also open to
pre-college students looking to pursue engineering education and careers in
electrical and related engineering occupations.
The
conference concluded with the traditional awards banquet where the student
competition winners and conference volunteers were recognized. The details of the program and many more
pictures for the events can be found online at the Region 1 GOLD website http://www.ewh.ieee.org/reg/1/gold/conference.

New
Program Provides Certification in Technical Wireless Expertise
The
Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers Communications Society (IEEE
ComSoc) has launched a new program to certify the practical knowledge and
skills of wireless communications professionals.
The IEEE Wireless Communication
Engineering Technologies (IEEE WCET) Certification Program has been
specifically designed by IEEE ComSoc to address the worldwide wireless
industry’s growing need for communications professionals with practical
problem-solving skills in real-world situations. With this certification,
professionals will be able to clearly demonstrate their knowledge of wireless
communications technologies to employers or change engineering fields as new
opportunities arise in the wireless industry.
To qualify for the IEEE WCET
designation, candidates with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
and at least three years of wireless engineering experience must pass a
detailed comprehensive examination developed by more than 100 industry experts
and experienced wireless practitioners. Administered on computer for the fee of
$500, the first testing period is scheduled for 22 September 2008 – 10 October
2008 at more than 500 testing sites located in 75 countries with the next
testing period slated for March 2009. Online applications will be accepted
beginning in mid-June.
The exam itself will consist of 150 multiple-choice
questions encompassing the wireless areas of RF engineering, propagation and
antennas; access technologies; network and service architecture; network
management and security; facilities infrastructure; agreements, standards,
policies and regulations; and fundamental knowledge.
In the coming months, IEEE ComSoc will
also launch a set of resources designed specifically to help participants
prepare for the examination. Two separate practice exams consisting of 75
different questions will be computer-based and available via the Internet for a
price of $75 for one exam and $125 for both. A Wireless Engineering Body of
Knowledge (WEBOK) sourcebook that provides detailed information on all the
specialty areas covered by the examination will also be available for purchase.
In addition, a Candidate Handbook for
the IEEE WCET certification program containing policies, complete details of
the subject areas covered, reference sources, sample questions, application
procedures and contact information is currently available free-of-charge
through IEEE ComSoc.
