NJ MTT-S/AP-S Chapters:

Groundwave Propagation Modeling Approaches and Numerical Simulation Tools

On July 20, 2010, the IEEE NJ Section MTT/S/AP-S chapters will host a talk on “Groundwave Propagation Modeling Approaches and Numerical Simulation Tools "  The speaker will be Dr. Levent Sevgi.

About the Talk

Ground wave propagation has long been one of the important options for medium and long range communication.  In addition to the classical LF/MF/HF broadcast and communication systems, emerging HF and VHF radar technologies, intelligent transportation or digital radio broadcast systems require understanding propagation characteristics over the Earth’s surface along realistic propagation paths.  It is therefore propagation engineers’ or site surveyors’ dream to have a numerical propagation tool that calculates path losses between any two points marked on their digital maps.  This necessitates the solution of electromagnetic (EM) wave equation in three-dimension (3D) which takes into account various EM effects, such as, the irregular terrain profile, the vegetation, the Earth’s curvature, the atmospheric refractivity, the presence of buildings, cars, and other obstacles, etc.  Also, it must include all the relevant scattering components (e.g., multiple reflections and refractions, edge/tip diffractions, surface and/or leaky waves, etc.) that account for the path loss.  Unfortunately, this is not yet in sight.

The aim of this presentation is to review groundwave propagation models and numerical propagation prediction tools and discuss problems and challenges as well as to project future developments.  The focus will be on the Parabolic Equation model and its applications.

About the Speaker

L. Sevgi (IEEE SM) has been involved with complex electromagnetic problems and systems for more than 20 years.  After completing his PhD with Prof. Leopold B. Felsen in New York in 1990 he joined Istanbul Technical University (ITU).  He was the Chair of the Electronic Systems Department in TUBITAK-MRC, Information Technologies Research Institute between 1999 and 2000.  He was awarded a two-year fellowship at the Weber Research Institute/Polytechnic University in New York in 1988 and also worked with the Scientific Research Group of Raytheon Systems, Canada during 1998 - 1999.  He was with the Center for Defense Studies, ITUV-SAM for the Turkish Integrated Maritime Surveillance System (Long Horizon) studies between 1993 -1997, and, for the Vessel Traffic System installation for Turkish Straits between 2000 and 2002.  Since 2001, he has been with Dogus University of Istanbul and has been the Director of MODSIM (Modeling and Simulation) Centre at the University.  His research has focused on propagation in complex environments, RCS prediction and reduction, EMC/BEM modeling and measurements, analytical and numerical methods in electromagnetics, signal processing techniques and radar systems.

NJ SP:

A Domain Specific Multicore Acceleration Approach for DSP

On Tuesday, July 13, 2010, the IEEE North Jersey Section Signal Processing Chapter will host a presentation entitled “A Domain Specific Multicore Acceleration Approach for DSP” by William Plishker.

About the Talk

Application specific design frameworks, such as GNU Radio for software defined radio, facilitate fast design flows by leveraging the common application structure of a particular domain and a rich library of elements tailored to it.  However, due to their focus on the application, implementations derived from these frameworks are often unable to take advantage of target platform features to achieve high performance.  To apply more extensive optimizations, applications described in such frameworks can be refined to formal models, making them more amenable to analysis and optimization.  In this work, we present a method for integrating GNU Radio with a dataflow design framework, the Dataflow Interchange Format (DIF), and implement dataflow actors targeting graphics processors.  GNU Radio is matched to a recently developed dynamic dataflow model and the actors are implemented in CUDA and characterized for dataflow analysis. This formal grounding of the application with a library of high performance actors should allow for target specific optimizations for performance improvements, while retaining target flexibility.

About the Speaker

William Plishker is a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Maryland focusing on application acceleration using dataflow modeling and leveraging different forms of parallelism. He has published papers on new dataflow models and scheduling techniques as well as application acceleration on multiple platforms including clusters, GPUs, FPGAs, and network processors. His application areas of interest include medical imaging, software defined radio, networking, and high energy physics.  He graduated in 2006 from UC Berkeley with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering after having received his B.S. in Computer Engineering from Georgia Tech in 2000. Dr. Plishker's Ph.D. research centered around the acceleration of network applications on network processors.

IEEE-USA in Action:

TV Reports on IEEE-Related Technologies that Cut Energy Costs, Protect Combat Soldiers, Ease Mobility for Medical Patients Available Online

Washington (10 May 2010) -- Seven new 90-second reports on IEEE-related technologies and breakthroughs were distributed in the first four months of 2010 to 83 subscribing U.S. television stations for broadcast on local news, with support from IEEE-USA.  Since 2005, IEEE-USA has, in partnership with the American Institute of Physics, helped to underwrite more than 800 local TV news reports on engineering and science -- in English and Spanish.

The four latest "Discoveries & Breakthroughs" reports include:

(1) "Save Money: Cut Energy Costs," in which engineers have designed a hand-held device that detects drafts around windows and doors.

(2) "Soldier Safety: Sniper-Detecting Helmet," in which electrical engineers (EEs) have developed a system that allows a soldier's combat helmet to determine the locations of enemy shooters and the type of weapons they are firing.

(3) "Can You Hear Me Now?," in which EEs have designed a radio chip for communication devices that mimics the way the human ear absorbs sound.

(4) "'Intelligent' Tools Help Disabled," in which artificial intelligence researchers have developed intelligent medical assistive devices that make mobility easier for patients.

To view these IEEE-USA underwritten reports go to http://www.aip.org/dbis/IEEE/.

Vetted by technology professionals, the reports are aimed at a high school-educated public that receives most of its sci-tech news through local TV news broadcasts.  National Science Foundation-sponsored research has documented that viewers of the "Discoveries & Breakthroughs" reports are more likely to support engineering and science than non-viewers.

New Jersey Institute For Modeling and Visualization

present

A Kinder, Gentler Introduction to High Performance Computing Applications

3rd Annual Week-Long Workshop for Researchers and Educators

Kean University, Union, NJ

June 28 - July 2, 2010

Cost:  FREE

Do you want to provide your students experiences with modern computational tools in your discipline? Do you want to explore research projects in high performance computing for your undergrads? Do you want to learn more about how common computational tools in your field run on large clusters? Do you want to explore visualization for datasets large and small?

Do you want a week of intensive learning away from your office, department meetings, and other work responsibilities?

The New Jersey Institute of Modeling and Visualization, in partnership with the National Computational Science Institute, is hosting a week-long workshop on high-performance computing (HPC) applications at Kean University from June 28th to July 2nd.

Our goal is to catalyze the infusion of HPC into all aspects of the undergraduate curriculum.  An abiding interest in bringing the HPC paradigm to the next generation of engineers, mathematicians and scientists is the only essential prerequisite for attendance.  The more diverse the backgrounds and interests of the workshop participants are, the richer the experience will be for everyone.

Accordingly, we anticipate having sessions that include everything from a focused introduction to supercomputing to breakout sessions in application areas determined by participant interest to advice about and support for building tools in widespread use among the scientific computing community.

This workshop will focus on helping faculty with the process of moving problems in their research, classroom, and student advising from the Desktop to High Performance Computing systems.  With a focus on applications, participants will gain experience using a variety of HPC tools on a 130 node, 1040 core cluster and advanced visualization hardware.

Much of the content will be cross-disciplinary, focusing on the details of running problems on HPC hardware (technical issues related to logging on and executing programs, schedulers, and realistic expectations of speedup,) as well as visualization tools and cross-disciplinary mathematical tools.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own problems to the workshop as well, and we will poll participants ahead of time with regards to discipline specific programs that should also be demonstrated.

Familiarity with either C or FORTRAN programming is encouraged, but not essential, as the focus is on software tools.  Participants are encouraged to have undergraduates enroll in and attend the workshop alongside them as part of a faculty-led team.

Additionally, specialized content will be selected based on applicant interest in a variety of parallel sessions, using domain specific applications in computational chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering.

This tutorial workshop is *FREE* (except you have to pay your own transportation costs to and from the workshop venue), and we'll feed you and house you at no charge.
