NJ Communications Society:

Optimized Design and Management of Overlay Networks

On Monday, May 3, 2010, the IEEE North Jersey Section Communications Society Chapter will host a presentation entitled “Optimized Design and Management of Overlay Networks” by Dr. Anwar Walid.

About the Talk

A myriad of networking services have emerged in response to growing technological and social needs which are facilitated by building hierarchical overlays on existing network infrastructures. Examples of such overlays include content distribution and peer-to-peer networks, IPTV and virtual private networks. In addition to providing QoS and security features, network overlays are also important internetworking models for converged technologies such as IP over Optical. Ensuring service quality and efficient operation require optimization of the topological design, the cross-layer interfaces and the control and management functions. I will review work on designing optimized overlays which enable autonomic capabilities for select applications and converged technologies..

NJ EDS/C&S:

An Indoor Positioning System Based on Global Positioning System Signals

On May 12, 2010, the IEEE NJ Section Electron Devices, Circuits and Systems Chapters together with the New Jersey Institute of Technology will host a talk titled “An Indoor Positioning System Based on Global Positioning System Signals."  The speaker will be Professor Ibrahim Tekin.

 About the Talk

The Civil Global Positioning System (GPS) has widespread use in many areas including location based services in wireless communication, traffic management and medical emergency services. Owing to the latest technological advances, with an error of only a few meters, GPS receivers are able to successfully locate themselves outdoors. However, in indoor environments, the GPS signals are attenuated by the walls, windows, metallic infrastructure of the buildings such that, it is not possible to decode GPS signals for location finding.

In this talk, an indoor positioning system based on GPS infrastructure will be presented to solve indoor coverage problem. The proposed indoor positioning system consists of directional GPS antennas, RF GPS repeaters and a GPS receiver with improved positioning algorithms. The design and measurement of the directional GPS antenna and the GPS repeater will be discussed in detail. All the RF system components are integrated with improved algorithms for the evaluation of the overall system performance at an indoor site. Results of the experiments show that the proposed system can be used for indoor positioning and hence continuation of the GPS service can be expanded indoors with hardware (antennas + repeaters) additions to buildings and a software update to the standard GPS receivers where indoor coverage is needed.

About the Speaker

IEEE Region 1 Southern Area Entrepreneur's Day on May 8th

The IEEE Southern Area Region 1 in collaboration with Monmouth University's 'School of Science' & 'Center for Entrepreneurship' is proud to announce the planning of the event - 'IEEE Entrepreneurs Day' on May 8, 2010, to be held at Monmouth University auditorium.  The seating capacity of the hall is about 300 though we are initially targeting a limit of enrollment at 200.

Given major restructuring of the industries we serve and the associated job cuts due to closing down of plants by major employers such as Bell Labs, Avaya, Ft. Monmouth (by 2011) in the Southern Area many engineers employed or otherwise are learning to be entrepreneurs entering into new areas of opportunities.  With our federal government’s focus on innovations in areas such as renewable energy and Bio Technology to get us out of the current economic conditions the question is how can our engineers plan to get a bit out of some $200 billion dollars of stimulus money not yet spent.

The IEEE Entrepreneur's day will be of various seminars that will provide attendees to learn as to:

·     How to leverage available resources from federal and state level

·     What successful CEO/CTO did in making entry in these new areas

·     What the government is trying to do from our Government leaders.

Invitations are being extended to Governor's office of NJ for his attendance as well as Congressional Representatives like Dr. Rush Holt who represents this area in Monmouth County.

Initially the event is open only to IEEE members with very nominal and non-refundable cost to cover lunch and coffee breaks, etc.  The best way for non-members to assure a seat is to become a member and/or they participate once space is available.  This collaboration with the departments of Monmouth University is a unique event bringing together Industry and Academic professionals in sponsoring a very high value activity.

More information will be available shortly.  Contact: TK Srinivas at: tksieee@gmail.com.

News from IEEE-USA:

Employment Up for U.S. Electrical Engineers and Computer Professionals

Washington (27 April 2010) - In what could be a positive sign of recovery for the U.S. economy, employment in three high-tech job categories -- electrical and electronics engineers; software engineers; and computer scientists and systems analysts -- returned to levels last seen in 2008, according to data released this month by the Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics.

For electrical and electronics engineers (EEs), employment grew 7.8 percent from the fourth quarter of 2009 to the first quarter of 2010, and now stands 16.1 percent above its historical low in the first quarter of 2009.  Software engineering employment was essentially unchanged quarter to quarter, but remains 5.3 percent above its first-quarter 2009 low.

For computer scientists and systems analysts, first-quarter employment grew 4.7 percent and is now 14.5 percent above its second-quarter 2009 low.

The unemployment rate for EEs has fallen from a high of 8.6 percent in the second quarter of last year to 4.6 percent in the first three months of 2010.  In the other job categories, joblessness grew despite the stable or positive employment numbers.

For software engineers, the unemployment rate went from 4.1 percent to 5.5 percent quarter to quarter.  During that same time, joblessness for computer scientists and systems analysts rose slightly (5.2 percent vs. 5 percent).  This trend might indicate that displaced employees in these areas are again seeking jobs.

"As we watch for signs of recovery, we think it's important to focus on the employment numbers," IEEE-USA President Evelyn Hirt said.  "Re-employed engineers, scientists and other technology professionals will help create more jobs and ratchet the economy forward."

Unemployed and at-risk IEEE members can find help at http://www.ieeeusa.org/careers/help/. Career enhancement resources are available at http://www.ieeeusa.org/careers/.

IEEE-USA advances the public good and promotes the careers and public policy interests of more than 210,000 engineers, scientists and allied professionals who are U.S. members of IEEE.  http://www.ieeeusa.org

present

A Kinder, Gentler Introduction to High Performance Computing Applications

3rd Annual Week-Long Workshop for Researchers and Educators

Kean University, Union, NJ

June 28 - July 2, 2010

Cost:  FREE

Do you want to provide your students experiences with modern computational tools in your discipline? Do you want to explore research projects in high performance computing for your undergrads? Do you want to learn more about how common computational tools in your field run on large clusters? Do you want to explore visualization for datasets large and small?

Do you want a week of intensive learning away from your office, department meetings, and other work responsibilities?

The New Jersey Institute of Modeling and Visualization, in partnership with the National Computational Science Institute, is hosting a week-long workshop on high-performance computing (HPC) applications at Kean University from June 28th to July 2nd.

Our goal is to catalyze the infusion of HPC into all aspects of the undergraduate curriculum.  An abiding interest in bringing the HPC paradigm to the next generation of engineers, mathematicians and scientists is the only essential prerequisite for attendance.  The more diverse the backgrounds and interests of the workshop participants are, the richer the experience will be for everyone.

Accordingly, we anticipate having sessions that include everything from a focused introduction to supercomputing to breakout sessions in application areas determined by participant interest to advice about and support for building tools in widespread use among the scientific computing community.

This workshop will focus on helping faculty with the process of moving problems in their research, classroom, and student advising from the Desktop to High Performance Computing systems.  With a focus on applications, participants will gain experience using a variety of HPC tools on a 130 node, 1040 core cluster and advanced visualization hardware.

Much of the content will be cross-disciplinary, focusing on the details of running problems on HPC hardware (technical issues related to logging on and executing programs, schedulers, and realistic expectations of speedup,) as well as visualization tools and cross-disciplinary mathematical tools.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own problems to the workshop as well, and we will poll participants ahead of time with regards to discipline specific programs that should also be demonstrated.

Familiarity with either C or FORTRAN programming is encouraged, but not essential, as the focus is on software tools.  Participants are encouraged to have undergraduates enroll in and attend the workshop alongside them as part of a faculty-led team.

Additionally, specialized content will be selected based on applicant interest in a variety of parallel sessions, using domain specific applications in computational chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering.

This tutorial workshop is *FREE* (except you have to pay your own transportation costs to and from the workshop venue), and we'll feed you and house you at no charge.
