Wikipedia Project
Overview
The Wikipedia assignment was broken into several sections that encompass different parts of the technical writing knowledge necessary. The major goal of the full project is to update, revise, or create a new article on Wikipedia. The different sections of the the Wikipedia project, gone into depth below, are as follows: a proposal, editing a Wikipedia page, a presentation to the class, a follow-up memo to the Professor, and an online presentation.

Proposal
We were to begin the Wikipedia project by choosing a specific topic for a Wikipedia article that either already existed and needed some form of update or needed to be created. Next, we needed to make a proposal to the Professor suggesting why we feel we should update or create this page on Wikipedia, what we plan to improve and work on, and how we will go about it.
My proposal article was of the article for the film "Colour Me Kubrick". I chose the topic because I had seen the film several times before updating the article and wanted to provide the film with an adequate article. I decided to use a memo for my proposal, as it fit very well with my method of description and allowed me to easily convey the information I needed to.
My Wikipedia Proposal is available here: ENG352H Wikipedia Proposal

Wikipedia Editing
Following the proposal to the professor, we were to actually work on the Wikipedia article we proposed to update. I wanted my page to fit well into the Wikipedia community, and be free from arbitrary deletion, so I followed the guidelines of Wikipedia closely, and brought content that fit into the rubrick we were given in class. My article has been up since I edited it originally, and has received some feedback and advice from members of the Wiki community.

Wikipedia Presentation
After editing the Wikipedia article to a level of completion that satisfies the class and my tastes (Wikipedia articles are never complete, they can be always be updated) , we were to individually present our changes to the class in the form of a presentation. In these presentations we were to strictly speak on what changes we made to the page, what references, branches, and links we added, and how our changes affect Wikipedia as a whole. I did my best to avoid teaching the class on my topic, and tried to present in a tone that effectively portrayed my information.

Wikipedia Follow-up Memo
Our next task in this project was to send a memo to the professor explaining why we felt a successful grade should be alotted to the work we did on the project. We needed to successfully argue that the time and effort we spent on this project was worthwhile, both in the class and in the community of Wikipedia. In my memo, I did my best to present the amount of work I did, both in the content and structure of the Wikipedia article and in the following presentation. Then I argued that this work was valid and worthwhile in the Wikipedia community, and is likely to stay a part of the community for a long time.

Finally, we were to present what we did in the Wikipedia project to an audience that wasn't a part of our class. In this presentation, we were to present all aspects of this Wikipedia project, from the Proposal to the Follow-up Memo, to an audience with very general knowledge. I did not narrate the presentation, so the powerpoint contains a lot more information than I would normally include as text.

Resume & Cover Letter

One of the earliest assignments we had was to make a resume and cover letter, using the techniques and ideas learned in class. The two documents needed to effectively display why we should be considered for some position. To ensure this, the information presented needed to be relevant to the position. A large part of resume building was trying to be selective with the information I presented; instead of including a biography of my life, I needed to give only the information that would show I had some past experience in this position.
My resume and cover letter are available in this password protected archive file: Resume and Cover Letter

Process Description Critique

Critique of Wikipedia Edit Process Description
One of the topics we discussed in class was how to properly send the message you have to an audience. We learned this topic by looking at many different process descriptions of various processes: tying shoe laces, configuring AFS access, and many others. The same problem kept arising when we tried to give the process description to a different audience. We learned that the scope of the information presented and the level of knowledge of the audience is very important when trying to convey information. To help understand this, we were to critique one of several process descriptions. For this assignment, I critiqued the process description of How To Edit a Wikipedia page. This assignment was earlier than the Wikipedia project, so I felt it would be a good first step into the world of Wikipedia editing.
The original process description of How to Edit Wikipedia articles is available here. NOTE: I did not create this process description, I critiqued it: How To Edit Wikipedia Pages

Group Oral Presentation
Another early project we needed to complete was to break into groups and present a topic, our first presentation to the class. My group presented the idea of Intellectual Property and Patents. This assignment helped to bring forth the troubles behind presenting a message to an audience. The assignment also forced us to work together, as a single presenting unit, and keep some flow from presenter to presenter. As the largest group, 6 people altogether, this was difficult, but we managed and very effectively presented our material to the class.
