County Fire 1: KDQ223

The tones for dispatching EBRS used to be received on Motorola Minitor II pagers on Middlesex County Fire-1, a VHF low-band frequency of 33.820 Mhz. East Brunswick uses a CTCSS tone of 156.7 Hz. All of East Brunswick's emergency services used the same CTCSS tone, but Minitor II pagers do not decode it. Instead, "permacode active filters" or "tone reeds" are used in pagers to activate them. The "tone reeds" in EBRS pagers were as follows:

Tone A     2575 Hz     Plectron Tone #33

Tone B     2164 Hz     Plectron Tone #29

Tone C     2361 Hz     Plectron Tone #31

How it Works: Tone A is broadcast for one second initially. Then, Tone B is broadcast for general tones or Tone C for primary (night crew) tones for three seconds, and the pager turns on the speaker. Each of these tones are broadcast continuously, but the pager itself makes a pulsating tone when Tone B is received, and a solid tone for night crew tones. I believe this is the "R97" configuration in the pager.

The following are WAV files of the tones. The general tones as heard are recorded from a Minitor II; the others are computer generated, but they are accurate, were tested, and do set off the pagers as expected:

East Brunswick Fire Department tones are as follows. They still are dispatched on County Fire 1:

General Fire Tones:                           #33 (2575 Hz) --> #23 (910 Hz)

Dist. 1-- Old Bridge Volunteer Fire Dept:     #33 (2575 Hz) --> #13 (1082 Hz)

Dist. 2-- East Brunswick Independent Fire Co: #33 (2575 Hz) --> #11 (992 Hz)

Dist. 3-- Brookview Volunteer Fire Co:        #33 (2575 Hz) --> #15 (1180 Hz)
