EMANUEL
AX, YEFIM BRONFMAN: CARNEGIE HALL
BRAHMS:
Variations on a Theme by Haydn, Op.56b RACHMANINOFF: Suite No.2 for Two
Pianos, Op.17 BRAHMS: Sonata for two Pianos in F minor, Op.34b It's
a very special event. We seldom got the chance to see two eminent pianists
on stage together. Emanuel Ax is known for his collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma.
I loved the work of Rachmaninoff and their encore, a four hands work of
Dvorak. Recently they released a CD, Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances &
Suites for 2 pianos. Martha Argerich, teamed up with Alexandre Rabinovitch,
also released exactly the same programs couple years ago. You may compare
these two and see which version you prefer. :-)

WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZARTn a Theme by Violin Concerto No.4 and No.3 and
Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat major for Violin and Viola, K364
I
believe a lot of people are familiar with Mozart's violin concertos. I loved
his work for violin and viola even more. You definitely will appreciate its
harmonic and beauty.

(Thomas Quasthoff, Bass-Baritone) LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN: Symphony No.3 in
E-flat major, Op.55, Eroica (1804)
-
It's
very touchy at the very beginning when Mayor Giuliani standing on the stage
and then police officer Daniel Rodrigues singing "God Bless
America". I
was so excited that I finally got the chance to see Berlin Philharmonic
Orchestra, conducted by Abbado, in Carnegie Hall. No mention it was the
opening night, thus the ticket was so hard to purchase. I was so in love
with Mahler's songs, so I decided to find the CDs afterwards. The orchestra
itself was so good, but I felt if they had added more Flute, OBOE, and
French Horn for the Symphony, it would have been perfect.

She's
a wonderful pianist. The timbre she played is so beautiful, clean, and
clear. I always love Ravel's music. Besides his melody, I love the
impression and message he sent in his music. Just love it!!

VIENNA
PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA: CARNEGIE HALL
-
I
don't like the music composing from 1910. However, Vienna Philharmonic is so
good that I just wow a lot and forget I was listening to the music I don't
like.

He
is unbelievable. Every time I am just so moved by his performance, full of
passions, spirit, and energy. This time, as usual, he played 8 extra
masterpieces for encore, and he said, "Because I want to."
Unfortunately, most of them I've never heard before, so I don't know all the
titles - he did announce on the stage though. I remember one is so called
" Deep River"; one is a Mexican love song; one is Basini's
work (if I heard the name right...:Q); American Paris?? If anybody knew the
completed lists of the encores, please let me know. I really appreciate it!
-
Special
Notes (Heifetz 1901-1987): It's fun to know that beyond violin playing, one
of his greatest talents was the art of transcription. Heifetz made more than
150 transcriptions of short pieces, published about two-third of them, and
recorded about 60. The majority of Heifetz's transcriptions come from solo
piano music. Heifetz once told Brooks Smith, his pianist of many years, that
in his younger days he was more interested in the piano than in the violin.

YORK PHILHARMONIC: AVERY FISHER HALL
-
It's
the first time I heard about Mr. Korngold's classical work (he is a famous
composer in Holleywood). His Violin Concerto in D major is very good. I'm
really impressed.

CELEBRATION AND CARMEGIE HALL RECITAL DEBUT OF LORIN MAAZEL: CARNEGIE HALL
-
Brahms'
works are so good; no matter it's a Violin Concerto, a Quartet, or a
Sonata. The melody is so beautiful that I can't believe someone sitting
behind me falling asleep during the performance and snoring so lound.
