CIS 456 - Open Systems Networking (3-0-3)
Prerequisite: CIS 114. An introduction to internetworking, including an in-depth study of the architecture of network interconnections, the internet services, and the protocols needed to provide these services. Topics include: architecture of interconnected networks, internet addresses and the address resolution problem, internet protocols, the domain name system, the socket interface, the client-server model of interaction, the OSI transport and application support protocols, and the TCP/IP application protocols.

Text: The text used in the course is "Internetworking with TCP/IP Principles, Protocols, and Architectures" Volume 1, Forth Edition by Douglas E. Comer, Prentice Hall, ISBN 0-13-018380-6. Please read the chapters in the book as specified in class and the syllabus located above.

Assessment and Grading Criteria:

Grades will be based on quizzes, two projects, extra credit, midterm and a final. There will be a minimum of 5 quizzes and a maximum of 8 quizzes. Quizzes will be based on material covered since the previous quiz. The typical quiz is a surprise quiz and is expected to take 10-15 minutes.  The lowest quiz grade will be dropped.  The midterm and final will take approximately 1-2 hours each.  Calculators are not permitted.  Other:  Please review “and”ing, “or”ing, binary and hexadecimal and make sure you can convert to and from decimal.  You should be able to do an individual programming assignment in the programming language of your choice.  No group projects.

Grading Policy:

Quizzes: 25%

Midterm: 25%

Final: 25%

Project #1: 10%

Project #2: 15%

Attendance will be taken in the event a quiz is not given. Quizzes not taken due to absenteeism can be made up by it being considered the lowest grade being dropped or by doing an extra credit assignment to be announced in the 2nd half of the course. If you need to be absent when an exam is given, please arrange with me prior to the exam.
