The Indian Graduate Students Association heartily congratulates you on your acceptance and welcomes you to New Jersey Institute of Technology. NJIT has a varied international atmosphere, providing ample opportunities for interaction with foreign students from all parts of the world. NJIT has a large Indian student population.  Sanskar, a voluntary non-profit student organization was formed with the objective of helping new Indian students coming to NJIT. The activities span from organizing cultural and social get together of the Indian community to make everyone feel at home.  The purpose of this website is to give you a few tips that will help you to arrive safely in Newark and make the transition a smooth one.

What is SANSKAR? What do we do?

 

Sanskar is an Indian Community @ NJIT. We are the Indian Graduation Student Association (IGSA) Club who organizes events like Bollywood nights, Holi Fest, Diwali Fest, and General Awareness Meets etc.

We want every student to take initiative and be a member of Sanskar for receiving regular updates regarding the events and meetings.

Application Procedure

 

1. Gather all the documents
a. Cover Letter
b. Statement of Purpose (SOP)
c. Recommendation Letters from College

f. Photocopy of passport
g. Photocopy of GRE & TOEFL Test(Also one copy from ETS)
h. Mark sheets of all the secondary and college board exams

j. Letter of sponsorship
k. Bank Letter
l. Financial Documents (Tax Papers / Asset management Paper)
m. Certificates (If any)

2. Send the complete package to the University

3. If the accept they will send an I-20 for you

4. Get the Visa date

Coming to NJIT /  New Jersey

 

This depends on the individual. You can come just before 2 days of the Orientation of 1 month before. Just make sure you are comfortable with the place and have good company of friends.

How to find a contact in NJIT Directory?

 

You can find anyone in the NJIT directory. Say Faculty / Alumni / Students by visiting the website

 Search for the contact information of the desired individual

How do I pay Fees? DD / Cash / Wire Transfer?

 

Generally we bring a Dollar Draft (DD) from India for the fees of first semester. Wire transfer is also preferable.

 Make the DD in the name of “New Jersey Institute Of Technology, NJIT “OR “NJIT, NJ”. OR you can make a DD in your name and deposit the DD in your Bank Account here and then make a payment to NJIT.

 If you are doing a wire transfer, you can get the NJIT A/c Number by calling the BURSAR department.

 Carrying a lot of CASH is not at all advisable.

How to find a Concerned Departments? 

There is a website for all the departments and faculty information falling under that department. Search it on NJIT’s Directory.

8.

Does NJIT provide Insurance Coverage? 

Yes, Except for Dental and Eyes, NJIT covers almost all other things. Exceptions are there, in case you will have to talk to a Graduate advisor in the Office Of International Students.

9.

Why are the Medical Forms necessary? When do we have to submit them? 

NJIT has to take care of the students here. Just to make sure you are disease free and immunized; Medical Forms are required.

 You can submit them once you reach here and after the orientation.

 Make sure you have the NJIT ID or Student Id number with you to submit these documents

Airport Pickup? 

Airport Pickup is available to all the international students. You have to inform the Office Of International Students (OISF) of your arrival details and they can pick you from the airport. Also you can email details at international.students@njit.edu  

This service is available for a limited period.

11.

How do I find temporary Accommodation? 

NJIT provides temporary Accommodation to the international students. You would be charged for the so many days of accommodation.

You can even contact a Senior / batch mate to see if he / she can provide you with a temporary accommodation.

12.

How do I find Permanent Accommodation? 

You can either stay in the NJIT Dorms where you get meals plans as well and you always stay near the campus so that you can have the resources whenever you want.

 The second option is to rent an apartment in the Harrison / Kearny area which is 20-25 minutes away from NJIT. You can have room mates sharing the apartment.

 There are several ways of searching an apartment.

  1. Kearny Observer Newspaper which is issued every Wednesday.
  2. http://craigslist.org à go to the section apt / housing and search for the place where you need an accommodation
  3. Contact a senior / batch mate as discussed above
  4. There are off-campus apartments listed on the Dorms (Reslife) website.

13.

How do I commute to NJIT from Harrison / Kearny? 

Commuting is not a problem as you can walk in the morning or catch the train / bus to reach NJIT. After 4.00 PM NJIT provides a shuttle service which passes through Harrison / Kearny dropping the students at the junction.

14.

Registration of courses? 

You can either register yourself by logging in you pipeline with the NJIT UCID and password and Add / Drop classes. Note if you are not able to do so, Don’t panic, contact the graduate advisor and they can assist you.

15.

Can I get a TA / RA ship?  

You can get a TA / RA ship depending on the availability. Generally it is very much competitive and you have to convince the professor that you are the right candidate for the respective post.

16.

How can I get an On-campus Job? 

Apply on the SEMS (Student Employment and Management Service). Search for the desired job and apply with your details.

17.

What do you mean by Co-op or CPT / Internship / OPT? 

Co-op or CPT: Curricular Practical Training, You can have experience working with an industry along with continuing with your studies.

 Internship: It is the same as Co-op except this name is give to summer jobs.

 OPT: OPT is the grace period for all the students completing their Masters / Bachelors to acquire experience in The United States. A student is on OPT period if he / she has graduated.

How is the Job Recruitment Co-op or OPT? 

It depends on the requirements in the industry you are planning to join. You can get all the information from the Career Development Service Department’s website.

 

19.

When can I start working on CPT or CO-op / Internship / OPT 

Once you have completed 15 credits / 9 months @ NJIT you are eligible for applying for a Co-op / Internship Job requirement. Also there are some check required which the Career Development Service department may evaluate.

For OPT, you must complete your graduation. OPT period is the grace period for all the students completing their Masters / Bachelors to acquire experience in The United States.

20.

Should I carry Books? 

You can bring the reference books. Other than that do confirm it with your departmental professors if you have already decided on some courses.

21.

What is Orientation and what do we do at the Orientation? 

Orientation is a meeting place for all the International Students and the faculties with who they have to stay in touch. Mainly the Office of International Students, the representatives from the Clubs and committees and other student representatives, who will provide a guided tour of NJIT Campus.

22.

How much Dollars to carry initially? 

It depends on the Individual; generally we can carry a Travelers Check (TC) which can be cashed at the airport avoiding the risk of keeping a big amount with you. You can carry around $ 200 and rest TC which is more than enough to reach your destination in NJ.

23.

How do I open a Bank Account? 

You can open a Bank Account with Wachovia / Bank Of America as they provide free student Checking / Saving Account. Also Wachovia has an ATM machine in the University campus which is easy to access.

24.

How do I Transfer Money from India to my account? 

You need a routing number which is provided by your bank at the time of opening an account. You can always call them on the toll free help line number for any queries.

25.

I have JFK / EWR as Destination which is the best to come to NJIT / NJ? 

Coming to EWR Airport is always preferable as it  is close to NJIT / Harrison / Kearny and pick up service is provided only for EWR airport.

26.

How do I Change my Department? 

For changing the departments you will have to talk to your current Graduate Advisor and ask him / her for the process.

27.

Why and When should I take Pre requisite Courses?

After you mark sheets evaluation If NJIT finds you need to take up a course then you will be informed. Also some advanced level courses require other courses to be taken first before registering.

28.

How do I get a mobile phone in NJ? 

There are Cellular Service providers in NJ namely Cingular / T-Mobile which provide different plans you would be interested in.

29.

I don’t have a Social Security Number (SSN); can I get a mobile in my name? 

You can get a mobile from T-Mobile service provider without any deposit unless they change their policy. Cingular will ask for deposit and then depends on the policy.

30.

Do I have to bring my International Driving License (IDP) / India License? 

Yes, It is necessary to bring the IDP as well as the Indian License to apply for NJ License which will waive the road test.

You can contact the Computer Maintenance Facility (CMF) or reach the counter to visit a Computer Technician and ask for an Advice about what need to be done to fix your Laptop / Desktop

How can I get a Social Security Number (SSN)? 

You can get a SSN by acquiring an On-Campus Job.
