 60th Independence Day Celebration on 15th August 2007 at NJIT .

Speech by Shreya Chowdhry , President , Sanskar (Indian Graduate Student Association)

India completes 60 years of independence today. When we look back we see a nation emerging from ashes, rising with the sun shining in the new independent sky, a nation breaking free from the chains which were holding it for long and trying to walk on its own.  We see a nation full of people with beaming faces and optimism in their hearts to lead the new India towards the path of success. When we stand here today and look back lets ask ourselves some questions- Have we achieved enough in these 60 years? have we fulfilled the wishes of our martyrs who wanted to see our nation  grow and be the symbol of harmony and peace? When we try to answer these questions I'm sure most of us are skeptical. We see on India which still lives in the villages unaware of the world which is growing at an exponential speed, it lives in ignorance,dweeling on the past. On the other hand we see an India which is eager to learn and be part of this fast paced world, an India which is slowly gaining in all sectors be it technology,buisness or anything for that matter. When we compare these two India's our doubts are doubled and we are forced to think are we truly developing as a nation?

To clear the skepticism of our minds lets fuel the optimism burning in our hearts which wishes for a dynamic new India which has in these 60 years stumbled, dusted and stood up again to face the challenges. The youth of a country are its future and taking our nation to new heights is now our responsibility. Our dreams have to be bigger, our ambitions higher, our commitment deeper and our efforts greater to make the dream that we have for a better India, a reality. I know what most of you must be thinking. Sitting here in a foreign country and talking about putting efforts to help our country grow is practically impossible. But then when your wishes are strong and your hearts willing distance does not matter. Lets join hands in bringing together the two facets of our beloved country. One which binds us to our nation-our values and culture and the second which urges us and tells us its time to fly. Let this be our strengths that we can proudly be the part of a nation which is free of illiteracy and poverty. Lets pledge today to be the force that reckons our nation into the top most league of nations and let nothing stop us. Here I recall some lines written by Rabindranath Tagore which motivate me and am sure will motivate you too-

Where the mind is without fear,

and head is held high;

where knowledge is free;

where the world has not been broken

up into fragments by narrow

domestic walls;

where words come out

from the depth of truth;

where the tireless striving,

stretches its arms towards perfection;

where the clear stream of reason

has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;

where the mind is led forward by thee

into ever widening thought and action

Into that heaven of freedom, My Father,

let my country be awake..

Let us be wide awake from the deep slumber we have been in and let us be responsible for the sake of betterment of our nation. On this day we should not forget the people who laid down their lives for the sake of our freedom, the brave souls who took responsibility to make our nation free so that we could breathe in the air of freedom.

Let us salute the brave souls of our beloved motherland and pledge that the sacrifices made by them would not go waste .As Independence day dawns over,heres wishing our dreams of a new tomorrow come true.

A French philosopher once said-

If there is one place on the face of earth where all the dreams of living men have found a whom from the very earliest days when men began to dream of existence it is, INDIA.

Let us maintain the dignity and respect that our nation has gained  for it is now on our shoulders.

Hindi hamari rashtrabhasha hai isiliye is avsar par main kuch hindi mein  bhi kehna chaungi-

Saare jahan se acha hindustan hamara,

hum bulbule hain iski ye gulsitan hamara;

hum is gulsitan ke hain wo phool,

jinka kartavya hai iski mehak ko badhana;

ise pragati ke us marg par le chalna,

jahan se vapas na ho fir aana;

aao aaj milkar le ik pran,

apne desh ke gaurav ko sada badhaenge;

aisi unchaiyon par le jayenge ke dekhega ye zamana;

saare jahan se acha hindustan hamara...
