Collective dynamics in suspensions of motile micro-particles

Abstract

I will discuss a hybrid mathematical and computational model to trace the dynamics of thousands of motile particles that interact directly and also via the fluid in which they are suspended and affect due to locomotion. I will discuss the differences in the macroscopic structures emerging in suspensions of interacting swimmers depending on the volume fraction, propulsion mechanism, shape. Applications of the method will be discussed, e.g. in bacteria suspensions or synthetic Janus particles, as well as how the particle interactions affect overall flow properties like transport, speed, viscosity.
