All the hotels except the Comfort Inn will accept reservations that extend before and after the meeting in case you want to do some sight seeing. Given the cost of hotels in this area we suggest you make your reservations early. The month of May is the start of good weather for visiting this area before the heat of summer sets in. Hilton Newark Gateway: http://www.newarkgateway.hilton.com Located in the prestigious Gateway Center with a connected walkway to Penn Station in Downtown Newark, the Hilton Newark Gateway provides amenities tailored to today’s traveler in a luxurious corporate hotel. The hotel does not provide free parking, although there is a public parking lot adjacent to the hotel (The overnight parking rate at that lot is $20). The main benefit of this hotel is you walk across the street to Newark Penn station and you can take a Path or Amtrack train to New York City or the Newark subway up to NJIT. It is about 3 blocks walk to the start of the restaurants in the Ironbound area. Beautifully appointed guest rooms feature: Individual Climate Control, Color TV with Showtime, Sony Play Station, Web TV, High Speed Internet Access, Two Line Phones with Data Ports, Coffee Maker with complimentary coffee and tea. The daily rate for the Internet is an added $9.95 effective 3PM until 12 noon. The Hilton provides complimentary 24-hour shuttle service to and from Newark International Airport. Hampton Inn & Suites: http://www.hamptoninnandsuitesnewark.com The Hampton Inn is located in Harrison, NJ. It is approximately a 10-15 minute cab ride or a 30 minute walk to New Jersey Institute of Technology. The Hampton Inn provides free “On the House Breakfast,” free Shuttle Transportation to Newark International Airport, Newark Penn Station, Harrison Path Station and Newark Downtown Business District. From the business district it is about a 10-15 minute walk to the campus. Free parking is provided on the hotel grounds. There is a Path Station in Harrison which the hotel shuttle can take you to if you wish to go to New York City. Rooms are equipped with free HBO, CNN ESPN and more. Free High Speed Wireless Internet Access, as well as In-room Wire Connections, In-room Microwaves, Refrigerators, Coffee Makers, Iron, Ironing Board, and Hair Dryers. There is an excellent Portuguese restaurant (The Spanish Tavern) two short blocks away and a small china town with some excellent and authentic type Chinese restaurants frequented by university students. Robert Treat Hotel http://www.rthotel.com/ Located opposite the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), the Robert Treat Hotel is just minutes from Newark International Airport. Complimentary shuttle provides hourly Service to and from Newark Airport, NJ Transit, Penn Station, and Broad Street. Coffee Maker in Room, Free Newspaper, Modem Lines in Room, Telephone, Television with Cable, and free High Speed Internet Access. Bring your own cable. The conference information area will be held at the new student center on the second floor outside the ballroom. We plan on providing parking on campus at the campus parking garage during the meeting for those that want to use cars. You should indicate you wish parking when you register on the ISCRAM registration website. The Ironbound is named for the three railroad lines that completely surround the area. It is the largest Portuguese community in the United States but also has large Cuban, and South American communities and corresponding restaurants and bakeries. Local Travel Options New Jersey Transit: http://www.njtransit.com/ This provides the information for travel around New Jersey and to New York City by train and bus lines as well as the Newark subway which goes to NJIT. Port Authority of New York and New Jersey: http://www.panynj.gov/ This site provides considerable information on all the transit systems interconnecting the three airports in the New York City area. We recommend you fly into Newark Airport as it is the easiest and least expensive options to reach Newark and the conference hotels. Click on the path line icon and then the system map to see how easy it is to take the path from Newark Penn Station or Harrison Path Stations to reach New York City in like 20 minutes with a single transfer at a track stop at journal square going up as far as 33rd Street. Amtrack east coast trains stop in Newark Penn Station and reach Boston and Washington D.C. with stops at most major east coast cities between the two end points. Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart: http://www.cathedralbasilica.org State and national recognition has been accorded Newark’s majestic Cathedral church, which was designated an historic landmark by the New Jersey Historical Society In December 1974. Two years later, on December 22, 1976, national recognition was given the Cathedral through its designation as a National Historic Site. Gardens and the Outdoors May is a wonderful month in this area for people who like plants and gardens. The New York Botanical Garden (http://www.nybg.org) is an extremely impressive collection. The Presby Iris gardens in nearby Montclair are world famous. The Leonard J. Buck Garden in Far Hills, NJ is a good example a great many gardens in NJ. New Jersey well deserves its title as the "garden state" and various gardens and arboretums may be found at http://www.ifplantscouldtalk.rutgers.edu/njfgaa New Jersey has some wonderful outdoor walking and hiking areas one half (South Mountain and Eagle Rock reservations) to two hour drives from Newark. The Delaware Water Gap area (on the NJ Pennsylvania border) offers both easy kayaking and more skilled kayaking depending on what part of the river you want to do.
