Note 1 - Recitation Assignments:

The text contains many projects requiring students to perform  sustained algebraic and trigonometric computations using techniques borrowed from calculus.  Most of the questions asked on our common examinations will consist of components of these projects.  In order to help students prepare for such examination questions, in which computations are isolated from the larger projects in which students are used to performing them, we have included “Modular Exercises” in most sections.  Many of these exercises appear under the heading “Group Study Exercises” and are assigned to be worked in the class recitation period.  Every common exam will contain some problems that are assigned to the recitation period.  Problems not completed in recitation should be carried over to the end of the week’s home work .  If necessary, students should consult the mathematics tutors in the University Learning Center for assistance on those Recitation problems not worked in the Recitation period.  If a Recitation assignment is completed early, students should begin READING the next section in the text.

 

Note 2 - The text begins with a Self Study Project.  It is designed to help students make the transition to University Level Mathematics, in which the textbook should be read and not just used as a source of homework exercises.  Although students will not receive any formal instruction on this material, a question from the Self Study Project will appear on the first common examination.  We encourage students to read and discuss this project amongst themselves in the first week’s Recitation Period, and if necessary seek individual assistance from the tutorial staff in the University Learning center.
