For the buttons above, the text makes the purpose very clear.
Some good effective buttons.
This site understands that its user is at a particular place and wants weather information for that place, so allows people to sign in and so be recognized. I.e. they don’t have to keep typing in a zip code. It is interactive.
A pressed button has depth.
Buttons without any text.
Netscape buttons with text.
Framed when mouse goes over it.
A button must project (to be "pressable")
Here is a quite different style, with different effect. Even so the information is structured under headings and sub-headings. A lot of the words a designed to bring up associations that might catch someone's attention - perhaps more for the searcher who doesn’t know what they want (cf Google). Notice when you go to a subsection, the title tells you where you are. (Education).
