The hodograph transformation and its generalization for fully nonlinear water waves

Abstract

The hodograph transformation (a transformation involving the interchange of dependent and independent variables) has been widely used to solve steady two-dimensional flow problems. In this talk, using a generalized hodograph transformation for time-dependent flows, I will describe how to derive the exact evolution equations for fully nonlinear water waves including the effect of slowly- varying bottom topography. Numerical methods to solve the nonlinear evolution equations will be also discussed and some preliminary numerical results will be presented.
