Performance-Related Characteristics of Scalability and their Consideration in Systems Architecture and Design

Impediments to system scalability often have their roots in the system architecture. Examples of impediments include wasteful algorithms, and more severely, design choices that prevent one from increasing system transaction rates even in the presence of added resources such as processors. We shall discuss the characteristics of scalability that impact performance, and explore how performance-affecting issues can be identified both during the design and testing phases.
