Future mobile wireless networks are characterized by high data transmission rate and support of high mobility. In order to meet such requirements, it is crucial to coordinate the BS activities. In this talk, I consider two types of inter-BS coordination: interference mitigation and load balancing. First, I will present a distributed interference mitigation scheme. Convergence results for the proposed scheme are derived based on Markov processes. Next, a load-balancing scheme is presented. NP-hardness is shown for the load-balancing problem and a half-approximation algorithm is developed to solve the problem. Finally, a scheme jointly considering load balancing, scheduling, and interference mitigation will be presented. Numerical results based on WiMAX simulation methodology are provided to validate the proposed schemes.
