The explosion of biomedical big data and information in the past decade has created new opportunities for improving the treatment and prevention of human diseases. But the large body of knowledge—mostly exists as free text for humans to read—presents a grand new challenge: individual investigators around the world are increasingly finding themselves overwhelmed by the sheer volume of published literature and are struggling to keep up to date and to make sense of this wealth of textual information. Our research aims to break down this barrier through natural language processing (NLP), text mining and machine learning. In this presentation, I will discuss our work on developing large-scale NLP tools as well as their uses in real-world applications in biomedical discovery and healthcare.
