Abstract

The U.S. Intelligence Community is required to understand and explain situations that encompass political-social, economic, military, information and physical environments that exhibit emergent behavior that is characteristic of complex and adaptive systems. This lecture introduces the challenges posed to intelligence by dynamic target systems that are complex target systems (social networks of structured and unstructured organizations) and those that employ denial and deception (D&D). The lecture introduces the principles of D&D employed to counter intelligence collection and analysis, before describing the methodologies that may be employed in an effort to understand and counter a variety of these activities.
