Past Announcements (Spring 2006)
- Exam 3 on Apr 11. 1 hours for 200 points. Per Syllabus (Handout 1), it is a
CLOSED-EVERYTHING exam. Material to be examined: Chapters 7,8,9,11,12 but not sections
11.5 and 12.4. Problem Sets PS6 and PS7 are appropriate study aids for this exam.
- Email problems resolved? I am responding to email that has been piling up in the
last few days because of software problems. I would at least acknowledge receipt of such
emails shortly (Tue 3/28 1:55).
- Possible email problems. Another course email account that i
am using seems to be having problems getting email. This means that the
course alg435 account may be suffering from email receipt problems.
My own account may also be suffering from similar problems!
If you sent an email since last Wed/Thu and did not receive any response,
please try my own account (alexg) instead (and let us all cross
our fingers that it will work). I'll be monitoring the
situation and will report new development later in the day (Tue 3/28 00:05).

- Exam 2 Information The exams will be returned in class on Tue Mar 21.
Exam solutions have already been made available.Exam
statistics are available in the protected area of this web-page.
Additional information is provided there on how to translate your Exam 1 and 2 grades
into an approximate letter grade. Do not forget that Exams 3 and 4 are still pending.
- Exam 2 on Tue Mar 7, 2006
- Time and Place: Standard, 6-8pm, 350points, lecture thereafter
(8:15-9:05pm).
- Open textbook only (CLRS)
Bring your own copy of the textbook; you are not allowed to borrow
a copy from a fellow student. Follow the guidelines of the Syllabus and read the
Syllabus carefully again.
- What does it cover?
- Chapters 1,2,3,4,6,7,8.1,9.1(min and max),10, and 16.3.
- Appendices A,B,C.1-C,3 which is Math 226/CS 241 material was also
covered/used/reviewed in class; although we will not ask
Appendix-specific questions you are expected to be familiar with the
material (eg. formulas for arithmetic/geometric progressions,
and graph/tree definitions).
- Use the posted problem sets and exams as guidance.
- PS 6 (Feb 28,2006) Practice Problem set 6 is available for download
- PS 5 (Feb 21,2006) Practice Problem set 5 is available for download; subjects 5-8
have been made available. Statistics for Exam 1 are also available from the protected area
of the web-page.
- PS 3 (Jan 31,2006) Practice Problem set 3 is available for download from the
protected area.
- Email Problems Tuesday Jan 24, 2006. I have not been able to read email
since early this morning. This affects all @cs.njit.edu email (course or instructor).
Email seems to have been restored around 2:30 in the afternoon.

- January 5, 2006 Uptodate syllabus information is now available. Links are changing
due to site update.
- Textbook Introduction to Algorithms, Second Edition, T. H Cormen, C. E. Leiserson, R. L.
Rivest, C. Stein, McGraw-Hill Book Company, 0-07-013151-1. Be careful when you buy the textbook
from the NJIT Bookstore. For some time in August 2005 the BookStore had the wrong textbook stocked
up both for this and the DL sections.
