ProctorU ------------ --------------------------------------- A. What is a ProctorU 'exam'? There is no ProctorU 'exam'. The exam is in canvas. In this course we will be using ProctorU Review+, NOT ProctorU Live for the proctoring part of the exam. In order to eventually do the exam you need to gain access to canvas using your myUCID credentials (login and password). In order to gain access to the exam in canvas you need to connect to ProctorU by using a preinstalled plugin on your browser. Be careful: you use the plugin in the browser, not the browser itself (the textbox where you type a URL). After you connect to ProctorU and ProctorU authorizes you, it provides automatically a password to canvas for you to gain access to the exam in canvas. From that point on (after a connection to canvas by ProctorU is established) exam time is running and proctoring is done by ProctorU that monitors your computer's activity. Thus the exam location is in canvas@NJIT, but the computer's proctoring is by ProctorU. Double check your myUCID credentials are not expiring around exam time! Renew them (new password) ahead of time! --------------------------------------- B. Get a ProctorU account. Go to proctoru.com and obtain (create) a login-name and a password (preferably, other than the myUCID one). If asked, use an NJIT email address. ProctorU will contact NJIT to authenticate your student status. For me (and my instructor status) this process took 2-3 days. Then it will send you an email to complete the account creation process. During that process you might need to test your equipment (microphone, camera, OS compatibility). See the appendix. --------------------------------------- C. Install the plugin to your browser This can be done some time prior to the exam. Use a Chrome browser. Firefox might work but Safari will not! Note that sometimes ProctorU inserts a link to the plugin in the Canvas quiz area and thus in an extreme case you might install the plugin through canvas. But the exam would be published a couple of hours before the exam time; naturally even then you won't be able to see the problems. Note that some students experience problems that can be resolved by ending the browser and restarting it after a minute or so. In rare cases, one might have to reboot the computer. If all is set, a blue owl (the blue owl of ProctorU) will appear to the top right of your (Chrome?) browser. Note that for ProctorU Review+ you do not need to book for the exam. This extra step is needed for ProctorU Live only. --------------------------------------- D. At time of exam/quiz (ProctorU Review+) YOU WILL LOGIN TO CANVAS AT SOME POINT USING YOUR myUCID (login and password). MAKE SURE THEY HAVE NOT EXPIRED. The exam link will be published (i.e. be viewable) about one hour ahead of an exam. But problems won't be viewbale then. Yet if you click on the exam link you are going to get an authentication error. This is because you need to click on the exam link after you connect to ProctorU through the plugin. The latter would be possible at exam time or afterwards. [Step 1] First you need to fireup your browser (Chrome) with the owl plugin. [Step 2] Then use the owl plugin to connect to ProctorU with the ProctorU login/password (not myUCID), You will be asked to show your NJIT photoID (in fact a government issued ID, but ignore it) [Step 3] Then after selecting the exam in ProctorU, ProctorU will log you in to the Canvas exam using a password generated by ProctorU. It is not cleat to me as an instructor when you login to canvas with your myUCID credentials: it might be done before Step 1 or before or during Step 3. Exam time starts from that point (completion of Step 3)! The most common error is to try to bypass ProctorU and clicking on the exam link when it gets published. For most students from firing up the browser to starting up the exam takes anywhere from 1mn to 5mn. I have seen a student starting an exam with a >1hr delay because he kept on trying to login to ProctorU through the browser box [https://proctorU.com] rather than clicking on the blue owl plugin located at the top right of the browser and insisting that everything was right! I had to ask for a screenshot to convince him that he was doing things wrong (never installed plugin!) --------------------------------------- E. Practice quiz without using ProctorU It is the VoP (Verification of Presence) during the first week of classes. But it does not require ProctorU proctoring. --------------------------------------- F. WHAT is ALLOWED in a ProctorU Quiz F.1 Your carrying an ID: either government ID (eg driver's license) or NJIT ID. ProctorU Review+ will complain about the latter, it will flag it and I will ignore ProctorU. F.2 A math-course compatible calculator (no kidding) F.3 2xSHEETS of paper i.e. a total of 4 PAGES. You must include at the top of each of the 4 pages, your last name in capital case (all), then your first/given name (first letter capital, remaining lower case) followed by a 1of4 , 2of4, 3of4, and 4of4 as needed. **************************************************************** The first thing you do prior to the START of the EXAM is you show those four pages in front of the camera of your laptop. You do likewise at the END of the EXAM. The sheets are for your convenience. They are not graded, they are not uploadable. **************************************************************** --------------------------------------- G. Accessibility [Dean of Students] For personal assistance go to the Dean of Students. They might provide you with hardware or assist you financially, independent of citizenship or immigration status. [OARS] For an exam, OARS accommodation need to be provided to ProctorU by the instructor by email 2 WEEKS before the exam. Get all approvals and formally inform the instructor 2 WEEKS+2DAYS before the first exam. Just remind the instructor for the accommodation 2 WEEKS+2DAYS before any subsequent exm. ------------------------------------------------- APPENDIX. ------------------------------------------------- Note: Currently ProctorU requires that you have an up-to-date version of Adobe Flash!
