EXPECTATIONS from YOU --------------------- Operating systems is probably one of the three courses whose textbook i thoroughly read myself as an undergraduate student (and also as a graduate student). There is no way to describe in the voiceovers or in class, or in the provided subjects all the information that needs to be captured to understand the subject. You will read the textbook chapter by chapter or section by section every week after (or prior to) each class. The subjects can provide guidance to topics that are of importance or less importance to this course or will not be covered. Microsoft Windows is an example that falls under the 'will not be covered'. You may ignore its discussion in the textbook. Linux on the other hand is not such a case. The level of involvement and reading will depend on its coverage in class and in the relevant subjects. Having read the chapters once prior to or after a class, you may read those chapters again before an exam but it is going to be a guided reading then given that you will have watched by then the voiceovers and hopefully the class and possibly the class recordings. Some subjects have review questions with answers They also have for your practice self assessment questions without answers. Then you are ready to do a homeworks (aka assignments). Your performance will be monitored through 3 exams. A. Before a class --------------- Subjects will be covered in sequence from Subject 0 to the last one. Anticipate what subject will be covered and minimally do as much of the following as possible, (A.1) review the slides of the Subject that is to be covered next class, (A.2) read the material from the textbook that corresponds to those slides, (A.3) follow the prerecorded Kaltura voice overs. Note that a subject might get split into modules on a specific topic of duration of 1-1.5hrs. B. During a class -------------- By default switch off Microphone and Video to save on bandwidth. I'll make sure this is so, but double check. In class i will try to follow more or less the flow of the voiceovers but more quickly and selectively because i anticipate you to do one of (preferably) A.2 or (minimally) A.3 already. Thus during class you might use the chat area to post questions you have already formulated because of A.1-A.3 activity. I might ask at intervals to ask question directly. By name i will ask you to switch on you mic, ask the question and then you switch off mic. Video usage is up to you. C. After a class ------------- Absolutely do A.2 You have a choice of A.3 and also to use the Webex recordings. I would rather use A.3 and after I complete A.2 and A.3 goto to Webex recordings. The reason; It is possible in one class to cover a bit of say Subject 4 and a bit of Subject 5. The A.3 recordings are split into modules for a given Subject and are easier to navigate around especially if you have previewed them. You can easily find the start of Subject 5 in A.3: it is the first Kaltura recording of the first module of Subject 5. For a Webex recording you need to do binary search to find the time i started covering Subject 5 in class! You are also expected to do some review questions (not for credit but for practice) available in the Subjects or in Canvas (to be determined). You are also expected to do the Homeworks. D. Personalized Instructor Contact Hours (not Office Hours) --------------------------------------------------- [Webex bases 4x 40mn periods spread on Tue and Thu] For Webex office hours, the first student joining Webex gets a 15mn 'notional' token. After 15mn if no one else joins, student gets it renewed for 15mn, otherwise is asked to drop the session and rejoin in 15mn with the other student getting the 15mn token. Tie-breaker if needed (never used): smaller last-4 digit ID. [@NJIT Meeting] Students and Instructor will wear face masks (NJIT or surgical) not face coverings. Both will wear gloves. The contact surfaces will not be cleaned after every student interaction but at NJIT determined intervals. For the @NJIT Meeting hours priority is given to students registered to a converged class. Note that I will be in a room without a computer so interaction will be face to face, verbal, with possible follow-up after that day. Use Webex instead if this is not to your liking. E. Other --------------------------------------------------- You are not required to attend a class (webex). I do not record presence or keep track of it. But presence records as captured by Webex can be used by NJIT to verify the "Regular and Substantive Interaction clause" related to (federal) financial aid, and international student visa requirements. A homework completion or exam participation can be used for that clause or the VoP quiz but there are not 15 of them in the semester for the 15 weeks of the semester. Regards, Alex.
