Final Exam Seating Arrangments and other (4/17@17:08)
The arrangements are not for the classroom but for the room
advertised in the Registrar's final exam schedule.
Currently (4/17@17:08) this room is CULM LEC HALL 1.
The arrangements have been posted (a) in Canvas Announcements,
and (b) in section C.1.b of this course web page.
The link Final exam information below provides additional information
including this item.
-
Accessibility of graded HW7 and/or HW8 in canvas (4/22@14:43)
An issue has been fixed. Note that HW7 and HW8 would be available for
review by midnight of May 2. Grades for both HW should be visible under
Grades in Canvas. Email the instructor is some problem persists.
-
HW8 is last homework (4/18@12:14)
HW 8 due earlier today was the last homework.
Its solution key is available both in Canvas/Announcements
and Section C of the course web page.
-
Subject 10 typos (4/09@16:05)
Slide 10 last line in green talks about a "(hard) like".
It is supposed to be a "(hard) link".
Slides 21, which is Figure 12.6 lists prominently the word
"Subirectory. It should read "Subdirectory" aka a directory
subordinate of another directory or equivalently a
directory contained in another directory.
Slide 29, lines about setUID bit and setGID bit:
"Affects c bit" and "Affects f bit"
should be
"Affects d bit" and "Affects g bit" respectively.
-
HW6 Q5 clarification (3/29@08:54)
All numbers are denary (aka radix-10), and so should the answers.
-
Exam 2 grading schedule (3/28@11:11)
Grading has been completed.
The grades and the exam have been made available in canvas.
Statistics in Canvas/Announcements.
Note that some visibility issues exist for paper-exam takers; paper
exams would be returned on Monday.
Midterm class performance statistics and letter guidance (approximate)
in Canvas/Announcements and based on
the scores you have collected in the Vop, Ex1,Ex2, HW0, HW1, HW2,
HW3, HW4 and HW5, representing roughly 60% of the course (610pts).
A solution key is also expected to become available on Monday.
-
Subject 8 typos (3/29@12:29;3/22@14:07)
Slide 16 mislabels the set of pages that are in main memory
as part of the resident set but also as part of the working
set. These are pages with page numbers 0 and 1
(rather than the indicated 0 and 3).
Those pages are stored into frames of MM with
frame numbers 10 and 3 respectively.
Slide 29 identifies an Example 1: call it case 1.
Slide 30 identifies an Example 2: call it case 2.
Slide 31 identifies an Example 3: call it case 3.
Slide 32 continues Example 3: call it a continuation of case 3.
Slide 33 identifies an Example 4: call it case 4.
This translation of an Example becoming a case explains the
label of Slide 35 and 36 ("...Case 3").
Moreover we do not need to change the Example 1 of slide 36 into
an Example 5!
On slide 17, on the line that has the word SLOWDOWN there is a
160ns. This should be 320ns, in line with the next line.
-
Exam 2 grading schedule (3/28@09:59)
Grading has been completed.
By around 11:00, grades would be made available in canvas.
The exam would be visible if possible (for non paper-exam
takers).
Around noon time to 2pm, I will post
midterm class performance (a letter grade guidance) based on
the scores you had collected in the Vop, Ex1,Ex2, HW0, HW1, HW2,
HW3, HW4 and HW5, roughly 60% of the course. All postings
in Canvas announcements. A solution key is also expected to
become available, but it won't be a priority.
-
Exam 2 planning, grading, etc (3/25@09:50)
Assuming all go normally with Exam 2, my (instructor)
intention is to complete grading by Friday (Good Friday).
By that time grades will be made available in canvas for all,
along with exam statistics. In addition I will post
midterm class performance (a letter grade guidance) based on
the scores you had collected in the Vop, Ex1,Ex2, HW0, HW1, HW2,
HW3, HW4 and HW5, roughly 60% of the course. All postings
in Canvas announcements. A solution key is also expected to
become available, but it won't be a priority.
-
Exam 2 preparatory (3/25@09:55am,3/22@09:11)
An email was sent out yesterday about the procedure of exam 2
taking. It is identical to the one you received prior to exam1.
Again you may request a paper exam in advance or few minutes before
the start of the exam. During the exam only a hardward failure would
switch into a paper exam. Reminder (see also a retired news item):
exam 2 covers Subjects 3,4,5 and 6 (i.e. Chapters 3, 4, 9 and 10
of the designated textbook).
The exam has been published in canvas (it is not available yet,
and it requires when it becomes available an authentication code).

-
HW5 solution key (3/22@12:26)
Available both in canvas/Announcements, and section C.
-
Exam 2 on Wed 3/27 (3/20@09:11)
Exam 2 is scheduled for Wed next week (3/27). Item preliminaries
below provides more information.
-
Exam 2 preliminaries (3/07@09:07)
We are almost three weeks ahead of Exam 2. THe material to be
covered would draw from Subjects 3, 4, 5, and 6 that maps to
Chapters 3, 4, 9, and 10 of the designated textbook. SA 3,4,5, and 6
might be relevant along HW 4 and 5.
-
HW5, Question 8, subquestion 2 minor remark (3/20@15:31)
It asks for the average waiting time: implied is of processes A,B, and C
similarly to subquestion 1.
-
Reminder HW5 (3/19@09:12)
Due this coming Thu (3/21).
-
OSL access (3/19@09:07)
If previously you were using say
(intentionally the number is wrong, use the one you used in HW1)
osl56.njit.edu to connect to an osl machine you may still connect
to the same machine if you use a different suffix such as
osl56.resource.campus.njit.edu,
and you will then be prompted (in a command-line primitive way)
for two-factor Duo authentication (a new featrure). You may also
login to an afs machine (similar to an osl machine) with say a host name
similar to afs56.njit.edu noting that afs56.njit.edu does not exist but the
number you used instead in HW1 maps to a machine that is alive and well
(if momentarily is not, use the protocol of HW1 with the modulo function).
-
Subject 4 updated (2/29@10:35)
The updated version of Subject 4 is available as Revision 1 in
Section C of the course web page ONLY. Slide 51 (code thread11.c)
has been modified and slide 41 some lines recolored.
-
Subject 3 updated (2/26@16:15)
The updated version of Subject 3 is available as Revision 1 in
Section C of the course web page ONLY. Slides 69-73 have been
modified with one slide added.
-
Typo Subject 3 slide 79 (2/23@11:54)
On slide 79, a
"Value returned by child is WEXISTATUS(stat)"
should read
"Value returned by child is WEXITSTATUS(stat)"
instead: in other words a T is missing between the
I and the S of the incorrect WEXISTATUS.
-
Exam 1 grading (2/22@11:40)
Check the item available in Canvas/Announcements.
-
Link to Exam 1 (2/20@09:11)
The link to Exam 1 has been published in Canvas/Quizzes.
What this means or does not mean you may find it in the email
you received from me through Canvas yesterday (Mon 2/19).
-
Practice Quiz (2/20@09:12)
Has been made available in canvas for a limited period.
-
Solution key HW3 (2/15@12:06)
It is available in Canvas/Announcements and also in Section C
of the CWP.
-
OSL Access (2/15@11:45)
Access to the OSL machines has been granted to all of you.
If you experience any connectivity problems, let me know of it.
Note that outside of the NJIT domain the use of VPN is required,
and starting this past weekend VPN activation requires 2FA.
-
Preparatory for Exam 1 (2/15,2/13@12:15)
On Monday 19 Feb you will be seated in the classroom
based on the seating arrangements that have been
made available in Canvas/Announcements. Furthermore
a Practice Canvas Quiz would become available at the start
of class time and cease to be available at the end
of class time.
It is setup with the attributes of Exam1.
If you bother you may complete it within
75min of the class period of 80min.
It asks one or two questions to
pretend that it does something that do not need more than a
minute of your attention.
Moreover it might help you deciding whether a paper
exam is a better alternative.
Exam 1 will cover material related to Subjects 0-2,
SA 0-2, HW 0-3, and Chapters 1 and 2 of the designated
textbook.
-
Q4 of HW3 clarification (2/13@12:15)
If a quantum or a timeslice starts at say a hypothetical
t=100s and a process arrives at t=100s the process can
use the CPU's quantum in the former case, or the timeslice if
it is entitled to it in the latter case.
-
Canvas issues (2/13@12:25)
I am experiencing Canvas connectivity issues and getting
an HTTP ERROR 500. I am letting you know of this.
Well, this is the reason of having this
Web-page as an alternative, and also as an
alternative form of direct communication.
If you are doing HW3 keep an electronic copy of your
answers.
Things seem to be working starting at 12:39pm.
-
Subject 2 Typo, Slide 73, (2/09@09:42)
"Question 1 or is it 8", line 12 has a "0.8ms+2*ts".
It should be "0.8s+2*ts" instead.
-
Exam 1 material coverage (2/08@12:44)
Exam 1 will cover material related to Subjects 0-2,
SA 0-2, HW 0-3, and Chapters 1 and 2 of the designated
textbook.
-
HW3, SA2 (2/08@12:44)
Now that we are past HW2, HW3 is active and due next Thu (before
noon) and so is active SA2 for a three week period starting
from yesterday.
-
Sol key HW2 (2/08@12:44)
Made available in section C of the CWP and Canvas/Announcements.
-
Sol key HW1 (2/01@12:56)
Made available in section C of the CWP and Canvas/Announcements.
-
ALERT: Subject 1 revised (1/30@14:27)
Subject 1 has been revised slightly. The revised version (R1)
and the original version ARE both available in Section C of
the CWP. Note that canvas only shows the original version
(canvas synchronization issues).
-
HW0 graded (1/26@14:27)
Grades in Canvas/Grades, HW0 is available
for a two-week period starting at 5pm, take
screenshots if needed and archive it. More
in Canvas / Announcements. If you want
not the last submission graded, the grader should
have been or should be alerted. Grader info as
given in class.
-
Verification of Presence
(1/29@08:57,
(1/25@10:00,
1/24@09:24,1/23@09:17, 1/22@09:11, 1/19@10:02,1/18@09:30
)
It has been completed.
Those who submitted the VoP quiz in canvas (or HW0)
Those who submitted the VoP quiz in canvas
have been verified
as of the time indicated in the header of this notice.
Effective Friday 1/26@09:00 those who have been verified by then
would have a YES and those not verified a NO in Banner. A NO
can be converted into a YES as soon as thereafter the VoP gets
submitted (Fri-Sun), or other work gets submitted (e.g. HW1).
-
HW0 solution key (1/25@12:30)
The solution key has been made available
both through Canvas Announcements and
Section C of the CWP. For future homeworks
such a notice might not be posted: check regularly
Canvas Announcements and there, there would be a
reference to a section C posting as well.
-
SA1 (1/24@09:25)
It has become available for a three-week period:
make a digital copy of it (e.g. screenshots),
practice with it, but definitely submit it once.
(This also applies to SA0, still available.)
-
HW1 (1/22@09:15)
HW1 has also been made available earlier today. It is due before
noon next Thu, a week after HW0. And do not forget (once and the
last time you are going to see it in this space): 12PM in canvas
is noon-time, not midnight.
-
HW0 typo(s) (1/18@09:40)
There is an amusing, if not embarassing, typo, in
HW0 question 3. A "Answer must including" should have
been "Answer must include".
-
Homework 0 (1/17@09:36)
HW 0 has become available in Canvas Quizzes. It will remain
available until 25 Jan 12pm canvas time
(for Canvas 12pm means noon time not midnight).
Jan 25 is a Thu, not a class day. It draws from prerequisite
material. It relates to Subject 0 (see below) and
SA0 (see below).
-
Self Assessment 0 (1/17@09:32)
Self Assessment 0 (SA0) has been made available in
Canvas/Quizzes and would be there available until 7 Feb
at 12pm (Canvas time which is noon time not midnight).
It is not for course credit but for you to practice with the
material of Subject 0 (prerequisite). Canvas Module Subject 0
can lead you also to SA0 (in addition to canvas quizzes) and
it contains the slides known as Subject 0 that we will be covering
in class during the first two lectures. It cover prerequisite
material. Document 2 (Canvas Announcements) contains more
background information, and of course your favorite prerequisite
course textbook contains complete information.
-
VoP Quiz (1/17@09:28)
A Verification of Presence Quiz (setup as a canvas quiz)
and available in the Canvas/Quizzes area would become
available 1 hour after the start of class. You have until the
second Sunday of the semester to submit it (28Jan) and 12pm for
canvas is noon time not midnight! It is a timed quiz: if you start
at any time during the 11 day period you must complete within
its time bound (I think 60min). If you answer all of its questions
right you get 20 bonus points (course scale: 0-1000pts).
If you just submit you get verified Mon, Wed, Frid between today and
Jan 29. Any other HW (homework) submission or Exam submission (too early
but...) can have you verified as well. The questions of the VoP are
answered on pages 1-4, and 11 of Document 1 (pages 1-4 is the Syllabus,
page 11 is the course FAQ). Document 1 is available in PDF in Canvas
Announcements.
