-

Slide 6 bottom with red ink say "AFS: uses 12 hour tokens".
Currently, at NJIT the duration of an AFS token is 10 hours.
-

be removed. Thus the sentence should read
"a lock for mutual exclusion, and"
-
(04/24) Seating arrangements for Ex3
In canvas/Announcements plus section C of the course web-page.
-
(04/25)(04/24) HW3 and SA8 graded

as SA would become available to May 8 thus for a period less

-
(04/24) Typo found SA8
It is inconsequential but embarassing and amusing.
There is a "acoomodate" for "accommodate".
I am trying to figure out what happened with the keyboard
at the time of that writing.
-
(04/24) Seating arrangements for Ex3
In canvas/Announcements plus section C of the course web-page.
-
(04/22) Reminder re HW3, SA 8
Due this coming Thu before 12pm (canvas for noon time).
-
(04/16) Subject 10 typos
Slide 29: "c bit", "f bit" should have been "d bit" and "g bit".
The c, f, d, g refer to the positional labels of the first line of
the slide. This can be ignored. The relevant material will be
skipped, so no hard done with the confusion introduced by the typo.
Moreover the "g+w" and "u-s" following the two "or" should
have been "chmod g+s filename" and "chmod g-s filename" respectively.
Slide 51: "inode represent" should have been "inode represents"
with a comma prior to "its".
Slide 69, last line contains a "directoy".
-
(04/17) Friday 4/18 is Good Friday
The University is closed: no office hours.
-
(04/09),(04/01) Subject 8 typos
Slide 15. It says "Cost of this slide: 1 instruction stalled,
plus 3*80ns + 20ms". It could have said
"Fetch stage: fetch stage executed plus 2*80ns, one execute
stage stalled, plus 1*80ns, plus 20ms (pager)".
So the "1 instruction stalled" is because the execute stage
was stalled.
Slide 46. In the inverted page table entry a period between
M (modified bit) and Ctrl (control bit) should have been a
comma (,) instead.
-
(04/03@12:43)
(04/02) Exam 2 grading
Grades in canvas would become available after noon time tomorrow
Thursday. Before then at least two Canvas announcements would be
posted: (a) exam statistics, and (b) midterm class performance
that will be based on the grades of the first two homeworks
and the first two exams but not on attendance or self-assessments.
The exam paper will be returned in the classroom around 09:45 this
coming Tuesday. A solution key would then become available through
canvas Announcements as well.
Grades for Exam 2 should be visible in canvas under "Exam 2 grade through".
-
(03/27) HW2 graded, SA5 and SA6 also graded
The solution key for HW2 both in Canvas Announcements
and in section C of the course web-page.
-
(03/21) Subject 7 typos
Slide 12: "For 32-bit ... it is no more than 32 bit"
and
Slide 12: "For 64-bit ... it is no more than 64 bit".
Both "it" refer to a page number.
There is a revised version available in Section C that incorporates
this change. I revised Subject 7 not because of this but
because the "Subject 7" was not appearing for some PPTX reason
on the cover page!
-
(03/20) SA-04 graded; reminders re SA-05, Sa-06, HW2
More in Canvas/Announcements.
Note that SA-05, SA-06 and HW2 cease to be available in Canvas
next week (noon Mar 27).
-
(03/18) Exam 2 on Tue 1st April at 8:30am
and grade reporting through canvas
A paper exam worth 250pt to be completed within 60 minutes.
Note that Thu 3 April is a Wellness Day for NJIT and there
is no class thus the paper exams will be returned on Tue 8 April.
What will be covered in Exam 2: Subjects 3, 4, 5, and 6.
A quiz in canvas named "Exam 2 grade through this template quiz"
has been published (Mar 18) and would become available starting
April 1 UNTIL April 3, 12PM (canvas definition of noon time).
If you submit this quiz and write YES as the answer to its
only question, I would be able to assign to it a grade which
would be your Exam 2 grade. This way you will learn your
Exam 2 grade prior to the Apr 7 withdrawal deadline and
prior to me handing out the paper exams on Apr 8.
If you do not submit, you will wait to April 8
to pick up your paper exam.
-
(03/12) Typos Subject 6
Page 16, "(ready queue of 0)" should read "(ready queue of 2)" since
10 mod 4 is equal to 2.
Also, on page 12, under load balancing there is a "B,D".
This is a typo: correct it into "B,C".
This is because "A,D" are already assigned to processor 0, and thus
"B,C" assigned to processor 1 generate a load-balanced system.

Tomorrow March 11 we are at 2 Tuesdays or two-class weeks
(discounting Spring Break week and Spring Break Tuesday) before Exam 2
SCHEDULED for Tue 1st April.
Note that Thu 3 April is a Wellness Day for NJIT and there is no class.
What will be covered in Exam 2: Subjects 3, 4, 5, and 6.
Self-Assessment 3, 4, 5, and 6
help preparing for Exam 2, and so does HW2.
-

SA 3 will cease to be available on Mar 13 (and canvas 12pm is noon time).
-
(03/10) Reminder for SA 4
SA 4 closes i.e. will cease to be available on Mar 20 which is during
Spring Break. My suggestion is to deal with it by the end of this week before you
hit Spring Break mode.
-
(03/10) Reminder for HW2, SA5 and SA6
HW2 and SA5 will case to be available on Mar 27. Likewise for SA6.
Note that HW2 contains material from Subjects 3, 4 and 5 so it is imperative that
you complete the study of Subjects 3 and 4 and their self assessments this week,
and may be leave Subjects 5 and 6 between Tuesday and Thursday, Spring-Break
and the week after.
Subject 5 coverage will be completed on Tue 3/11 and Subject 6 on Thu 3/13, hopefully.
-
(02/28) Exam 1 grading info
The exam has been graded. It will be returned at 9:45
in the classroom; Tue non-attendees can pick it up on
Thu from the classroom at 9:50 or during office hours
thereafter. Statistics are available in Canvas
Announcements and Section C of the CWP.
A solution key would become available through
Canvas Announcements starting 5pm on this coming Tue.
Afterwards it will also be posted in Section C of the CWP.
-
(02/28) HW2, SA3 and SA4
SA3 has been active and SA4 will be active starting on Tue.
HW2 will also become available on Tue (3/4) one week earlier
than anticipated in the syllabus. HW2 draws primarily
from Subjects 3 and 4 with the last two problems from Subject 5.
Most of the material will be covered next week, and a bit the
week after. Thus before the Spring break we will have covered
in class Subject 3-5 and possibly Subject 6.
-
(02/28) SA5 and SA6
SA5 will be active on Tue (3/4). Coverage of Subject 5 will start on
Thursday though. Both Subject 5 and 6 will be completed by the
Spring break. Exam 2 will cover Subjects 3,4,5, and 6.

-
(02/20) Solution key for HW1 and SA02
The Homework has been graded. So have SA01 and SA02.
All are available in Canvas starting 1pm today for 2 weeks.
In addition a solution key for HW1 has been posted in Canvas
Announcements plus Section C of the course web-page.
Moreover, a solution key for SA02 has been posted in Canvas
Announcements: this was done to clarify further issues with the
last question(s).
-
(02/20) SA-03 typo
Question 1.7 lists an USER-IR. It is a typo it should have
read USER-ID. Consider it a USER-ID when answering 1.7. For question 2
utilize the following case sensitive words or phrases: the four words
are PID, context, process, thread and the phrase is context switch.
Not all of them need to be used and they can be reused.
-
(02/20) Section C: Link error to Subject 3 fixed
Header says it all.
-
(02/07) SA1 minor typo
In 6(b) there is a "Express is a percent". It
should read "Express it as a percent".
That is do not write for example 20 or 0.2 but
instead 28%. See also the comment in parentheses.
-
(02/06) SA0 (aka SA-00) graded
SA0 has been made available for a two week period.
Take screenshots and digitally archive it as needed.
The answers and your answers should be viewable.
-
(02/05) Thu 6 Feb class in ZOOM

(01/07) Course Web-page and Canvas (LMS)
The course web-page (CWP) duplicates some areas of canvas
that are behind 2FA authentication. This is done for easiness
and replication purposes. Section C authentication credentials
are on page 5 of Document 1 (canvas) and Document 1 is attached
to message 1 in Canvas Announcements. Canvas will be released Jan 14.
The syllabus is available through section B.
-
(01/06) Syllabus in Section B
