Posted in canvas announcements.
The HW3 is available for LESS than the normal 2-week period.
It ceases to be available at the end of the reading period
(12/12 at 23:59). Bear this in mind, and take screenshots.

Line numbers on page/slide 30 are a bit out of order 1,2,3,4,3
instead of 1,2,3,4,5.
On page/slide 33 the last line reads "Lines 2-3". It should
have read "Line 1" instead.

(11/21) Thanksgiving shortened week 24 Nov - 26 Nov
(a) There is going to be a class on Mon 24 Nov and
regular office hours would be observed as scheduled.
(b) Tue 25 Nov and Wed 26 Nov NJIT follows a Thu and Fri
schedule respectively. Therefore on Wed 26 Nov there is
going to be NO CLASS and NO OFFICE HOURS since it will
be NJIT Friday.

Note however that the availability until date of SA8 is
immovable. It expires on Nov 26.

Moreover, if you have not done a course evaluation yet,
consider doing it next week. A course evaluation link/option/button
is available in Canvas on the left side of your window view (Home
area column, around the fifth button from the bottom of the column).

(11/19) Minor typo Subject 10
Subject 10 typos Slide 29:
The "g+w" and "u-s" following the two "or" should be corrected;
the text should then read "chmod g+s filename" and
"chmod g-s filename" respectively.

On the slide of PDF page 42, there is a
"A case 6 using case 5 and case 4 ideas".
Ignore this sentence.

(11/04) Exam 2 grading and midterm class performance
The grading process is to be completed by 17:30 today
Wed 11/4. Announcements will become available in
Canvas/Announcements about (a) exam statistics,
(b) midterm class performance (approximate letter grade
quality guidance),
and (c) the solution key.
The exam will be returned in class tomorrow 11/5: be seated
based on the seating arrangements of the exam.

(11/04) Presence recording
From around 5 minutes after the start of class, to around
15 minutes later a form (similar to the signup form used
in the exams) will be made available. Use your exam number
to sign and confirm your presence in the room.
One unexcused absence is forgiven;
one excused absence (Dean of Students letter or email) is forgiven.
Then, the first absence reduces the number of bonus points
by 50% and so does each subsequent absence.

(11/04) Assignment activity in canvas
SA7 has been available;
SA8 will become available tomorrow (Wed 11/5).
HW3 will become available next Wednesday (Wed 11/12).

(10/31) HW 2, SA6
The solution key for HW2 is available in canvas or Section C of the CWP.
The HW will be released for a two week period in canvas as soon
as it is graded by the TA (possibly no later than Saturday).
In the mean time, if you had a digital screenshot of your submission,
you would have access to the questions, your answers, and the correct
answers. SA6 as it is by default self-graded by Canvas, it has been released.
By now, TA intervention for units would be limited to non-existent.
Do not forget, SA is not part of the grade rubric of the course.

On pdf slide 26, "better use same processor" should
read "better use same set of processors".
Moreover "caching issues" should read "e.g. caching issues".

(10/29) (10/24) Exam 2 preparatory
Material coverage is after where we stopped in Exam 1
that is, Subject 3, Subject 4, Subject 5 and Subject 6 will be
examined in Exam 2.
These subjects correspond to Chapters 3, 4, 9, and 10
of the designated textbook.

Availability extended by 24 hours. It will now be
available until 17:00 of Thu 23 October, 2025 (canvas time).

(10/20) Canvas Accessibility today
Some time after 8am today canvas accessibility became
spotty if not impossible. This relates to an announced AWS
problem. The situation is being monitored. The course
web-page is still active and thus some material are still
available through section C of it.

(10/14) SA 3-6
All assignments are due before 17:00 of the dates referenced
next (available until in canvas is equivalent to due before 17:00 of
the date referenced next).
SA 3 is due before Oct 22, SA 4 is NOW due before Oct 27 which
is a Monday (extended), SA5 and SA6 remain due before Oct 29.

(10/10)(10/07) Exam 1 grading
The exam has been graded.
The exam will be returned in the classroom (end of class -5minutes).
Discussions about grading @ office hours (afternoon of 10/8 or afterwards).
A solution key will be provided later in the week in Canvas Announcements.
Statistics are already available in Canvas Announcements.
Unpicked exams can still be picked from instructor's office during
designated office hours. For office hours, see the syllabus page 1
(Document 1 is syllabus) or click on the link at the top of this page.

(10/06) (10/02) HW1 sol key
The solution key for HW1 has been posted in
Canvas Announcements.
The HW itself would be
released through Canvas Quizzes when its review by the TA
gets completed Friday or early Saturday.
Hopefully, you have the questions in the screenshots
that you have already taken.
The HW has been released in Canvas/Quizzes.

the course web-page (CWP).
Exam 1 covers Chapters 1 and 2 of the textbook, i.e.
Subjects 0,1, and 2. This implies SA0, SA1, SA2, and HW1.

Both SA2 and HW1 are available until 17:00 on Wed 1 Oct.
On Thu or Fri a solution key for HW1 will be posted
in Canvas/Announcements. This is just for Homeworks.
For Self-Assessments see Canvas/Quizzes: a quiz becomes visible
for 2 weeks after the Available Until date but solutions can
also be visible after a 5th attempt.

for seating as a practice run.

In a Practice 2.1.1 question there is
a reference to Slide 39 (Page 48).
Replace it with a reference to Slide 33 (PDF page 40).

(08/26) Canvas activity
An welcome-email message will be sent to you on Thu morning. This
step will be repeated next Wednesday 3 Sep.
Five messages will be posted on Canvas Announcements at 5pm this
coming Thursday. Four of them contain attached pdf documents:
the syllabus (Document 1), course delivery (Document 2), a math and cs for
OS brief (Document 3), and a Document P that will be used only on emergencies
(it describes exam taking and proctoring in such extraordinary situations).

(08/26) Course web-page is being built
Sections A and B will be populated with information as
needed. If something is missing, it will appear
in the LMS (Learning Management System) known as canvas.
The canvas 332 area will be published on Thu, or may be
earlier.
