• 12/15 (09:54) and 12/14 HW6 All emails received through 00:04 of Wed Dec 14 related to HW6 have been acknowledged. Emails re grades and feedback for HW6 were sent out in the morning of Thu Dec 15.
• 12/13 HW5 emails I have just completed the emailing of HW5 grades.
• 12/06 Final Exam The cs345 final is scheduled for Fri Dec 16, starting at 8:30am at CKB 222. NOTE THAT CKB 222 is NOT the regular LECTURE ROOM but another ROOM; . however it is on the same floor and one of its entrances just across one of the two elevators. Given that the exam info MAY change, here is the link to the Registrar's page that contains up-to-date information: Registrar's Final Exam Schedule.

  For the final the material of Subjects 1-8 and the corresponding material from the textbook is in the exam (Subject 9 is NOT in the exam). So are the four homeworks, HW1, 2, 3, and 4. This includes the two papers on the Google Search Engine Architecture and Google cluster architecture.

• 12/06 HW6 Reminder that the deadline for submission is the last day of classes i.e. Dec 13. No extension will be granted as the final is 3 days later. Make sure that you test your finalized submission on an afs machine to speed things up and minimize any further interaction with me. Record the version of gcc or g++ you may use by typing gcc -v or g++ -v. For java there shouldn't be any problems as 1.8.0_101 seems to be mostly available; confirm this by typing in javac -version or java -version. For python definitely provide instructions and version used (NJIT supports 5 versions of python 3, and 4 or more of python 2).
• 12/03 (updated on 12/05) Reminder HW5 : First Day Double check that the links in the protected are work for your imminent presentation. First check the one page summaries. The presentation links would be setup Tuesday morning by 10am. Those of you who are scheduled for the first day of presentations (Dec 6) bear in mind the Sunday (Dec 4) 5pm deadline for the summaries and Monday (Dec 5) 5pm deadline for the presentations themselves. Do not expect any response after Monday 5pm. The rest of you who are presenting a week later add 7 days to the above deadlines.

• 11/29 (updated) HW4 All homeworks received through Wed 30 Nov, 00:01 have been acknowledged.
• 11/18 Tue Nov 22 is a Thursday for NJIT; no class and no office hours.
• 11/18 HW5 Schedule has been posted. (Two links under L0 correspond to the Microsoft Word and the text-based version of the schedule. Note that both might get updated in the near future and this will be reflected through the Last modified note there.)

• 11/18 Miscellanea All Homeworks have been posted. All Subjects through and including Subject 8 have been posted.

• 11/08(Updated thrice) Some papers already taken up and other topics The following papers have already been booked as of this writing: 1, 2, 11, 12, 13, 16, 21, 25, 27, 36, 37, plus papers outside of L7. This list is NOT UPDATED frequently. If you find other papers related to those subjects elsewhere they may become candidates for inclusion. (Search google!) Note some of the links require that you either are at NJIT or have full VPN NJIT access. But the local copy link might work instead. Be reminded to check (for HW4) your web-page's cached status with Google (as told in HW1, Problem 1). Those who got a confirmation through Sunday Nov 6, 2016 will be sheduled for the last day of classes (Dec 13).
• 11/01 Midterm Class Performance and Exam 1 Statistics about Exam 1 are available in section C3. Midterm class guidance is available in section C1. It is based on performance in HW1, HW2, and Exam 1.
• 11/01 HW3 has been posted in section B (Handouts).
• 11/01 HW5 deadline for paper proposal submission is approaching: Nov 8.
• 11/01 Subject 6 has been posted in section C.
• 10/27 Exam 1 (aka midterm) The exam has been posted in Section C.
• 10/21 HW2 solutions Solutions for HW2 are now posted in the protected area of the course web-page along with some comments for some errors made.
• 10/17 Midterm Exam is scheduled for next week i.e. Tue Oct 25. For logistics see Handout 1 (Syllabus). (Open hardcopy of designated textbook only, etc.) It will cover all of Subjects 1,2,3 and 4 and the corresponding material from the textbook as specified on the cover page of every Subject. Note that Subject 2 is the Brin and Page paper. It will also cover HW1 and HW2. The exam will start around 1pm. After a 10minute break class lecture will resume at 3pm.
• 10/16 HW2 submission All email submissions received through Wed 19 Oct, 00:01 have been acknowledged.
• 10/4 Email (even from an NJIT address) There was a report from a student in the class that his HW1 submission had not been acknowledged by me. For some reason it is possible that email even from an NJIT sender can go directly to one's spam folder. It happened verifiably to me few hours ago when an NJIT staff member's email went directly to my spam folder. It seems NJIT's spamming filters are too aggressive. I would urge you to be alert in subsequent email submissions of a HW: if you do not receive an acknowledgement within a reasonable amount of time, resubmit. Use a browser based system connecting through webmail.njit.edu; avoid email clients.
• 10/4 HW 2, Graded HW1, HW1 Solutions, Papers for HW 5, and Subjects has been posted in Section B; 6 screenshots not available in hardcopy are related to HW2. HW1 has been graded and will be at the break around 2:35pm today. Solution summaries for HW1 were posted in Section C yesterday. Few more papers have been added in Section C (under Paper Links, sublink L7); they can be used for the presentation related to HW 5. Subject 4 has been posted in Section C.

• 9/25 HW1 submissions All email submissions received through Wed 28 Sep, 00:00 have been acknowledged.
• 9/22 Subject 4 has been posted.
• 9/22 Page 1 of Subjects 1,2,3 has been updated to reflect more closely the topics covered from the textbook.
• 9/20 Subject 3 has been posted.
• 9/20 Subject 2 typo has been corrected. (In Page 26, I added a tuple (3,4,4) in the second writing of the inverted index there).
• 9/14 HW1 typo HW1 had a typo a 2015 instead of a 2016 reference. This has been updated in the pdf version of the document. No other typo has been detected.
• 9/13 Subject 2 has been posted.
• 9/12 HW1 has been posted.
• 9/07 Verification of Presence Those present in class yesterday and registered had their presence verified in Banner.
• 9/05 Subject 1 In protected area C you may find Subject 1, notes drawn from Chapter 1 of the textbook but also from other sources. Access requires the password that will be handed out on the first day of classes.
• 8/31 Handout 2 (Computer Science Fundamentals) For the first week of classes study Handout 2 and in particular pages 1-3,5-10,19-22.
• 8/31 Homework 5 and Homework 6 The last two Homeworks (!) have been posted. Homework 5 is a paper presentation scheduled for the last few week(s) of the semester. Homework 6 is a programming project: three or fewer students can work together on it.
• 8/31 Sullabus information and course FAQ They are available through the first link of the section B listing below. Inside Section B look for Handout 0 (FAQ) and Handout 1 (Syllabus). The syllabus can be retrieved also directly from the section B listing below.
