(12/11) MP grading and test23/option23
There have been some emails about test23/option23.
This testing has to do with correctly implementing Search(k3) after
performing a Delete(k3), where k1,k2,k3,k4 are keys with the same hash value.

The CS 435 final exam is scheduled for
Wed 19 Dec, 2018 (regular classroom KUPF 207, and NOT the recitation room, starting by 6:05pm);
2hrs, 333pts, see Handout 1 for logistics..

If the exam DATE changes for any reason this news item will be updated accordingly.
MAKE SURE THAT YOU SWITCH OFF ALL MOBILE DEVICES (CELL/MOBILE
PHONES,COMPUTERS, DIGITAL PORTABLE DEVICES) before entering the EXAM ROOM.
A clean copy of Handout 4 on red-black trees is allowed in the exam room besides
the designated textbook (CLRS, 3rd edition; CLRS 2nd edition is also an
acceptable replacement.)
The material that will be covered includes (more details at
the beginning of every online available subject) Subject 1-Subject 11;
Subject 11 will not be examined but you are expected
to know the definitions of P and NP.
From Subject 10, only the material covered in class.
In the context of the designated textbook
(CLRS, 3rd edition) this translates into the following
chapters/sections.
- Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4 (but not 4.6), 6, 7, 8, 9, 10,
11 (but not 11.5), 12 (but not 12.4), 13,
15 (introduction to dynamic programming),
16 (Huffman related, pages 414-415 and 428-437).
- Chapters
17 (amortized analysis, pages 451-452),
21 (union-find, pages 561-573),
22 (with section 22.5 as done in class),
23,
24 (only Dijkstra's algorithm),
25 (pages 684-687, 693-700 Floyd-Warshall),
- Chapters
28 (pages 813-815, note Strassen is 4.2),
30 (pages 898-901) and Problem 30-1 (page 844),
31 (page 956-958 on x**n, exponentiation).
Appendices A,B,C (review material).
Chapter 34 introduction, but explicit questions on NP,
NP-completeness will not be in the EXAM.

(12/4) Exam Week Office Hours
During the examination Week office hours will be Tue and Wed 4-5:30pm.
Thus there will be no Wed 10-11:30 office hours, they will be move to Wed afternoon; the
Tue office hours will not be touched.

This area will be populated with info about the mini-project and its grading.
The preliminary expectation is that grading will be completed around the Reading Day Period
unless something else gets posted here.

(11/29) MP submission using Moodle: Do not forget to press the SUBMIT button

(11/29) Recitation Dec 5
For the recitation, do not forget to bring a copy of Handout 4, handed out in class
during the Nov 28 lecture.

(11/28) HW5 grading
Moodle claims one HW5 needs grading but i cannot find it. If you have nor received
a grade for HW5 let me (instructor) know of it.

(11/26) Recitations
This coming recitation (11/28) will be given by the Course Assistant; if you have questions
re the MP, prepare them in advance. The remaining two recitations will be given by the instructor.

(11/26) Section C: PS8 and Subjects
The last problem set was posted in Section C. All Subjects are now posted as well.
Section C is fully populated with course material.

(11/19) Week 11/19- 11/21
Note that Tue (11/20) is a Thursday for NJIT and Wed (11/21) is a Friday.
No class, no recitation, and no office hours in either day.

(11/14) Subject 8
The proofs of correctness for Floyd-Warshall and Dijkstra's algorithm have been rewritten/retouched.
This only changes slightly page 25 and 27 of Subject 8.

have been posted. Note that HW5 is due in 2 weeks i.e. before noon-time of Wed Nov 28.

The Exam itself is available in Section C along with solutions.

(10/23) Midterm exam related
The midterm exam will be posted next week. Solutions will become
available late next week.
Statistics are available in Section C.4. Midterm class performance is
available in section C.1.a; it includes a rough letter grade guidance
based on work already done (homeworks and exams). The midterm might be
handed tomorrow in class or if there are unexpected developments in a second
review, definitely by next week. (Stats will not change as they affect only
decimal digits that are not reported.)

In problem 1, a page number 143 has been changed into 167.

(10/11) Exam 2
The exam covers all material covered in class from the start of semester through the evening of
Wed Oct 10. Chapter-wise from the textbook this is Chap 1, 2, 3, 4 (but not 4.2 Strassen's, and
as far as 4.6 is concerned to the level done in class), 6, 9.1 (min, max, min/max), 10,
16.2 and 16.3 (Huffman and Greedy Algorithm discussion), 21.1-21.2 (Union Find and disjoints sets),
22.1 (repr. of graphs) plus appendixes. Much of the material of appendixes is covered also in Handout 3.
Roughly all these chapters is the material outlined in Subjects 1-4 and roughly PS 1-5 (but some
material of PS5 is not in the exam).

(10/1) Subjects 1-8 @ Section C
I posted additional subjects and reposted all previous ones. There have been
no changes in substance; my LaTeX macros got messed up and unwittingly i was
supplying wrong course/semester or section information. This has been fixed.
Contents remain the same (if you notice a change, let me know) though indentation
might have changed slightly due to differing margins.

(9/28) Exam 1 related
The exam has been posted in section. Statistics are also available
there. It will be returned around 7:40pm next class. Solutions will
be posted next week for a selection of problems.

(9/26 Wed) Exam 1 and Exams
Exams are always held during class hours and start at 6pm.
Never during recitation. You need to write down on the exam paper
the last four digits of your NJIT ID! Memorize them!

(9/18 Tue) Seating Arrangements for Exams
The first exam is scheduled for Wed 26 Sep at 6pm. Seating arrangments with
exam numbers are in Section C.1.b. Use your first name (substring of) and last three
digits of njit ID to locate your exam number and seating position. View is from
the instructor's area towards the rear of the room.

(9/18 Tue) PS 3, Subjects
has been posted. Additional subjects have been posted in Section C.

(9/12@16:00 Wed, 9/13@12:37 Thu) HW1 grading
The Homework is being graded. But note the grading is not going to complete
until after a second review is completed by 5:30pm or so.
HW1 has been graded. Note that it is 15pts. Do not scale it to 100pts or ignore what
moodle reports.

(9/12 Wed) HW2 and PS2
HW 2 (for credit) has been posted in moodle. PS2 with solutions has been
available in Section C.

(9/11 Tue @ 11:47) Recitation Room Change
Note that the recitation room (1-2pm Wed) has changed. I have just been informed
that we would not meet at CKB 303 for the recitation but at ECEC 115.
At the head of this page the old room CKB 303 has been stricken out and the new room, ECEC 115 has
been added.
I'll be sending a note/email through moodle shortly to restate this.

(9/6 Thu) Verification of Presence
The names of those of you who completed the verification of presence sign up list
yesterday have been inserted into Banner.

(9/5 Wed) MiniProject, Handouts 0-6 in Section B
The MiniProject due in three calendar months has been posted in Section B accessible through the
first link of the Section B entry area below in this page.
Moreover Handouts 0-6 have been uploaded in section B. Read the MiniProject
with Handout 2 (Progr. Guidelines). Handouts 0-1 will be given in hard copy in class; Handout 1 (Syllabus)
is also available in HTML but the layout might be different from the pdf/printed versions; hopefully
the contents remained intact during the transformation into HTML.

(9/5 Wed) PS1 and Subjects 1-3 in Section C
The password protected Section C (login name is available in Handout 0 but the password will
become available to you in class in the hard-copy of Handout 0) contains the first problem set with
solutions PS1 and class summaries in the form of subjects: Subjects 1-3 have been posted.

(9/5 Wed) Homework 1 and also the MiniProject in moodle
A short Homework 1 (HW1) has already been posted in moodle under Sep3-Sep9. It's due in moodle
next week before noon time (reported as 12:00 PM in moodle) in electronic (in fact pdf) form.
Practice with PS1 before you move to it. The MiniProject is also available in moodle under announcements.
