(12/14) PrP grading
The grades are available in Canvas. Note that testing instances
that check the integrity of your code are the examples
discussed in the PDF document of the PrP (available in Canvas) or in
class.
Moreover for option 1, a file that contains all the examples
is available in Section B in a .txt file
named fileOption1.txt. That was the first test for Option 1
used (though in the testing we
excluded the 15 print line to make testing simpler). Likewise
for the hits and pagerank
the simple graph used in the example in class (and thus discussed
in the notes, handwritten or typewritten) was one of the examples.

The material that will be covered includes (more details at
the beginning of every online available subject) Subject 1 all the way
through and including Subject 10 and Subject 13.
Subject 12 was not covered in class, and Subject 11 was covered in class
but will not be examined.
For Subject 13 definitions re poly-time,
decision vs optimization problems may only be examined.
Text-book (GT) wise, this material is covered in Chapters 1-7 and
Chapter/Section 9.3, and the outline/conclusions of Chapter 13.
More detailed information is available on the front of each
Subject that shows the correspondence to the textbook.

(12/13) (12/10) Update on PrP grading
and Email issues
The PrP is still being graded; the objective, as of now, is to release
grades this weekend or late on Sunday or Monday at the latest.
As it was already mentioned, it is not easy to
predict in advance the volume of submissions.
Moreover there seem to be some issues with code
that does not compile (and i have instructed the grader not
to interfere with student code to be compilable on Thursday) and
apparently code that does not even pass the testing instances outlined
in the PrP itself and at the same time there is no
info about bugs in the .txt file. It is for this latter reason that
grading got delayed even more; i have instructed the grader to
strictly follow Handout 2 and avoid reading student code that delays grading.
On a separate note, email seems to be tardy today. Expect delays if you
plan to send an email to us or you expect to receive an
email from us. (To put things into perspective i received an
email right now that was sent from within NJIT on Nov 24...)
-
(12/9) ProctorU announcement: Review+ is Record+.
ProctorU announced that what was known as ProctorU Review+ (that all
of our exams utilize) has been rebranded and renamed as ProctorU Record+.
Do not get surprised if you see the new name!
-
(12/2) Uploading files to canvas.
Canvas behaves like MS Windows on files with same file names.
If a.zip gets uploaded twice an a.zip coexists with an a-1.zip.
We only see the a-1.zip though
from the grader's perspective. No need to send us email on this.
-
(12/1) Final Exam (aka Exam 2) NOTICE 1
The final exam is in about two weeks from now on a class day/night, starting at
6pm, and its duration is that of Exam 1 i.e. 2hours (120mn). Logistics those of
Exam 1. The text of the canvas quiz details that will be used and the first and
last questions re scratch space/paper can also be found in Section C under exams
in a file named fin.txt (after the HW4 solution link/URL).
-
(11/23) (11/16) November 30 onwards
NJIT President Bloom announced that starting November 30 NJIT
will only offer online instruction. Note that effective Web 11/25
the city of Newark will be in lockdown. Thus the broadcasting of the class
will be done from outside of NJIT after Nov 25;
expect noise and potential disruption.
You have the Kaltura voiceover (in addition to the regularly posted Webex
class recordings) to compensate for Webex disruptions.
-
(11/16) November 30 onwards
NJIT President Bloom announced that starting November 30 NJIT
will only offer online instruction.
The changes are going to be minimal. Those of you
who are in the US and at NJIT have access to @NJIT hours.
These hours would become now Webex hours. Unfortunately I will
be utilizing a different webex meeting number.
Info will be posted soon in Canvas Announcements.
You are going to see a file starting with 2ndWebexr1 that
would contain prior but also new information related to
Tue 1-2:20pm for Tue 1 December and Tue 8 December 2020.
All other meeting numbers remain the same (and untouched by me).
-
(11/16) Canvas Behavior
(a) When you review your Exam in canvas, canvas shows your answers first.
It might also show the correct answers as well
(i don't have your view available as an instructor.)
But when you compare such answers with solutions beware of the order of
the questions in YOUR exam to the order of the answers in the .txt file.
Sometimes questions get rearranged by canvas. This might affect question 2 and
question 4.
(b) If you submit prp_1234.zip and then you decide to update it and resubmit it,
the new file will be prp_1234-1.zip and subsequent files will have -2, -3 etc.
Only the last one is viewable by me and i would presume the grader/TA. We know
about that but also make sure that you not put some file in prp_1234-1.zip and
some files in prp_1234-9.zip. Only the most recent upload seems to be available
to us; thus in this example make sure prp_1234_9.zip must have all the relevant
files. Hopefully none of you will submit 10 different versions of the PrP.
-
(11/02) HW4
It has been published but will be available after Nov 2. Note the number
of points because of Canvas is 37 instead of the syllabus announced 30.
You have the opportunity to pick up some bonus points though.
-
(10/30) Exam 1 solutions
Sample solutions in canvas announcements; comments about the problems at the
bottom of the document.
-
(10/26) Exam 1 info
Some preliminary information about the grading is available in Canvas Announcements.
-
(10/14) Calculator issue
Exam 1 does not require a calculator. However, a calculator was mentioned in the 3rdProcU.txt
document. As a result i added the use of a physical calculator (Math Dept specifications)
in the exam. Note that 'physical' means you are still not allowed to use calc.exe, the Windows calcalculator. You might need to show it in front of the camera during ProctorU authentication.
-
(10/12) HW3
It has been graded and grades released in canvas. You should also be able
to view your submission(s). Solutions are to be posted in section C.
-
(10/12) (10/8) (10/6) Exam 1
Exam 1 is next week (today, as of this writing, it is Mon 10/12).
Material that will be covered includes
Subject 1 through and including Subject 5. Textbook-wise,
see C.6 and also the cover page of each (typewritten) Subject involved.
PS1 through PS5 are also part of the exam. Some guidance about the
structure of an exam is available in C.5 (midterm exams).
-
(10/6) Email and Grading
Please use the email address and protocol as specified in Handout 0.
Only the grader knows the exact point allocation for a homework problem.
-
(10/8) (10/6) Exam 1
It is in two weeks (from this date).
-
(10/6) Handwritten Notes
Some of you complained that the handwritten notes are clipped at the top.
This is because of the behavior of the printer scanner used to scan them into
smaller sized PDFs. I have posted the originals scanned through a desktop
scanner also posted in section C (at the very bottom of Section C). But the
sized of each PDF is 10-20 times larger.
-
(10/1) HW3
has been out since Wed. Due this coming Wed before noon.
After that practice with the Problem Sets. You are expected to
have already created a ProctorU account by now or by this coming week
at the latest.
-
(9/24) HW2 typo
There is a \cdot somewhere by accident. It is the multiplication symbol.
That is $3 \cdot 5$ is $3 . 5$ or $3 x 5$ i.e. expression evaluates to 15.
-
(9/23) ProctorU confirmation email during Student registration
ProctorU confirmation Email Link Info
NJIT has informed me that this is indeed the case: a confirmation email is being
sent to everybody (students or instructors). Check the URL above for
some info if you have not received one. I have been told by some students
that they DID receive an email.
-
(9/21) HW2 posted early
It has been published in Quizzes. You won't be able to see it at all in Canvas
Modules. And most likely you won't be able to see the problems in it before
midnight Tue 9/22 to Wed 9/23.
-
(9/21) HW1 sample solution summary
It is available in section C, the same area Problem Sets and exams are posted.
Moreover HW1 grades have been released in Canvas and they should be viewable.
In addition in HW1 you should also be able to see the correct vs your submitted
answer for the multiple choice part of it.
-
(9/13) Canvas, grades, and grading totals (or not)
The grades in canvas for Homeworks will be made available about one week
after the due date. Thus if a due date is Wed before noon, expect
that grades would be revealed the following Wed sometime after noon.
Anything before then might be unreliable or unviewable.
Moreover, Canvas percentage points or cumulative scores are unreliable;
as already noted in Announcements, Canvas has no idea what the grading
scheme for this course is.
-
(9/11) Section C.0
The ProctorU related document 3rdProcU.txt has been made available through section
C.0. This was originally available only through canvas (Announcements) as an
attachment. Moreover there is an updated version 3rdProcUr1.txt in C.0 that
contains some additional NJIT information in an Appendix. Those additional
links point to canvas space and you need to provide canvas authentication
(i.e. login to canvas) to access them.
-
(9/7) Links to media
Very few of you have reported issues with the Kaltura voiceover accessibility.
Although NJIT has been experiencing a variety of issues, at the time of the reporting
i had no issues accessing the voiceover under a student persona.
Errors might have been due to authentication issues. Moreover if you
access NJIT material from a google drive, you need to have NJIT authentication to do
so. (Eg the Review+ link in C.0). For such a case access the local link (PDF) made
available to you by me instead.
-
(9/4) Homework 1
The Homework (aka HW1) appears under Quizzes by default. It might appear in other
areas as well but Quizzes is the default area. It has been posted ahead of time.
Grading starts after the due date (a Wed).
-
(9/4) NJIT'S IST ProctorU Review+ link
A file has been made available by NJIT's IST that shows the steps from firing up
the browser to using the ProctorU plugin. It's the last link of section C.0.
-
(9/4) Webex Recording First Class
A webex recording of the first class is now available in Canvas (Modules).
-
(9/4) Verification of Presence
Several students' presence has been verified but several students' presence
verification is still pending! Act, please!
-
(9/2) Handout 5 (.txt) added in Section B
How to write math in a .txt file.
-
(9/2) Verification of Presence
Starting 6:30pm of the day of the first class, Verification of Presence
will be updated every morning.
-
(8/31) Email today
An email was sent earlier today to all currently registered students
with information about the Webex class session.
This info has also been available in canvas Announcements and
elsewhere. It was sent out just in
case some students registered in the past few days.
-
(8/24) Section C
The handwritten notes were uploaded with a correct orientation.
Moreover the handwritten notes of Subject 1 come in two flavors: appendix at the end,
or appendix pages dispersed before their first reference.
-
(8/24) Canvas issues
The VoP link in modules (or Quizzes) won't work until the first day of the
semester. The PrP link in Assignments might not work because of canvas issues, but in
Files it worked for me. A canvas 'Quiz' can be a homework, an exam, or a verification
of presence challenge.
-
(8/24) Canvas issues
Canvas misbehaves and sometimes reports 'high traffic' issues. You might have
better luck if you go to Files and navigate its folder/file structure or
Assignments or Quizzes instead (later in the semester).
-
Tue 8 September: A Monday for NJIT
On Tue 8 Sep NJIT follows a Monday schedule. Only Monday-related activities
take place; no Tue activities that Tuesday.
-
(8/20) Webex info for classes
All classes utilize Webex. Info for Webex meeting numbers and passwords is
available in canvas. GO to canvas announcements and locate the announcement
that deals with Webex. Check its text (.txt) attachment for details.
-
(8/20) Canvas area for course
The canvas area for the course has been 'published'. It contains materials
in primarily three areas: Announcements, Modules, and Quizzes. Yet the first
Quiz (Verification of Presence) pops up as an Assignment (an alias for a HW).
You are also going to see it (VoP) under the area 'Syllabus' of canvas.
-
(8/20) Exam taking (Fall 2020)
All exams will be in canvas utilizing ProctorU Review+.
-
(8/18) Section B: Syllabus and other Handouts
The syllabus and other handouts are available through the links
of Section B.
-
Page Under Preparation
Section C has been populated but is password protected.
Canvas associated information has not been published yet: it would
become available after Aug 25. Note ALL exams would be ONLINE exams
using ProctorU Review+.
-
Page under Construction
Page is being prepared for Fall 2020.
- No announcements> Come back at the start of the semester.
