The dicussion below applied under the providision that there is no violation of the Collaboration policy of the Syllabus. Dept grade policy guidelines are also applied. Students are groupped 'curve like' per about half of standard deviation (usually 70-90pts but the top group is wider because of the 850pt threshold, see below and the Syllabus). Final Letter grades are decided for six groups (A, B+,B,C+,C,F) under the provision that students 500 points or higher can NEVER get an F, as long as there is no violation of the Collaboration policy of the Syllabus, students over 850 get an A, and the course average maps to around the bottom of the B group (as opposed to the stricter curving method that maps it to the top C+ area). ADJUSTMENT-1 Students with i. < 500 pts AND ii. # points >= 50% of top student's points, AND iii. final >= around 50% of top Final exam grade also get a C even if they have < 500 pts. ADJUSTMENT-2 A violation (or violations) of the Collaboration policy of the Syllabus adjusts grades lower. Dean of Students office messages adjusts grade lower as well. Definitions Definitions =========== =========== N = number of students taking the exam Interval = 0 to maxpoints possible for exam (as in Handout 1) Average = Sum of exam grades divided by N Stand Deviation = Shows dispersion of grades. Roughly, 2/3 of the grades are within 37 +/- 12 , and 95% within 37 +/- 2*12 if ave is 37 and std 12 Median = Half of the students got that much or less (and half, more than that).
