Past Announcements for Spring 2021
-
(4/16) Typo (redundancy) in PrP Option 2
Option 2 of the PrP (or PP) in penultimate paragraph contains
after the last sentence of it a "filename first.)". This a typo.
Ignore it.
-
(4/14) NJIT and Webex: weekend
NJIT has announced that starting Friday 10pm (4/16) through late
Sunday (4/18) Webex access might not be available and this would
affect Webex Recordings. The expectation is that it won't affect
Kaltura material that has been prerecorded.
-
(4/12) Typo for text related to Q1-Q6 of HW4
In the text prior to Q1-Q6 there is a
docID = Number of B for doc28ID
The latter doc28ID is a typo: it should be docID not doc28ID.
Thus the line should read
docID = Number of B for docID.
-
(4/8) Typo Q9 of HW4
It has a sentence that says "2 pts for each of the two questions".
There are three (sub)questions to Canvas Question 9, not two and each
question is indeed 2 points,
as specified, but of course the total is 6pts.
-
(4/5) Midterm class performance guidance
The guidance is now (4/5@9:43) available in Section C.1 of the
course web-page.
-
(4/2) HW4 to be posted earlier
It will become available on Monday 4/5.
-
(4/1) Course Evaluation
Sometime on late Tue (4/6) or early Wed (4/7) you will receive an
email re the course evaluation. There will be an available session
to complete the evaluation in advance
from 11am through 5pm on Thu (4/8)
(through canvas or the NJIT GO app). If you postpone doing
it at that time frame, it can then only be done after Apr 12, 2021.
-
(3/26) Exam 1 solution summary and midterm class performance
It has been posted in section C.
Midterm class performance would be made available next Friday Apr 2.
If PrP option 1 grades are available it will be based on (HW1-3,PrP,Exam1);
otherwise on the other four components lister earlier.
If you did not submit PrP option 1 but wait for PrP option 2, substitute
appropriately for the first case.
-
(3/22) Exam 1 (midterm) grading
The exam has been graded. Grades are available in canvas. The exam,
your answers and comments/solutions to some problems are viewable in canvas.
Statistics are available in section C of the course web-page.
Representative solutions outside of canvas will become available
in section C later this week or early next week.
A midterm class guidance will be posted at the end of March and prior to the
April 5 withdrawal deadline. Our intent is to wait and have grades for PrP option
1 included in this guidance. If the latter is not possible the guidance will not
have a programming component and will be based on HW1-3, and Exam 1 only.

(3/19) PP option 1, page 3 : Clarification
On page 3 of the PP the sentence
"Note that the ASCII values has for 'alexg' as prescribed give a 4 ..."
is bad English, and confusing at best. Moreover the numeric values
listed are off by 2 (at best) or 4, depending on how one reads
this sentence. This sentence should be rewritten or read as
follows:
"Note that the contribution to the hash function of the sum of the ASCII
values maps 'alex' to an 8, but 'tom' and 'jerry' to a 6 before the subtraction
by 2 occurs. In other words,
h(alex,0)=6, h(tom,0)=h(jerry,0)=4.".
This is because the hash function includes a minus 2 and for example
the characters of alex map to 97, 108, 101, 120 respectively and
"97+108+101+120-2" is a 424, and thus
the remainder of 424 divided by 11 is a 6. Likewise for tom and jerry.
-
(3/19) PP option 1, page 3 : Clarification
On page 3 of the PP the sentence
"Note that the ASCII values has for 'alexg' as prescribed give a 4 ..."
is bad English, and confusing at best. Moreover the numeric values
listed are off by 2 (at best) or 4, depending on how one reads
this sentence. This sentence should be rewritten or read as
follows:
"Note that the contribution to the hash function of the sum of the ASCII
values maps 'alex' to an 8, but 'tom' and 'jerry' to a 6 before the subtraction

"97+108+101+120-2" is a 424, and thus

(3/12) Post Exam 1 and pre PrP Option 1
An email has been sent out earlier today.
It covers Exam 1 grading and what to expect
re Exam 1 in the following weeks. It serves also as a reminder for
the PrP option 1. Pay attention also to the paragraph discussing the
daylight saving time switch this coming Sunday and how this might
affect those of you who are outside of the US. Next week is
Spring Break. Stay busy and safe!
-
(3/7 ) Availability of Webex recordings
One of you has reported issues with accessing Webex recordings from canvas.
I was testing class WebexRecordings both from canvas and directly from
Webex and it seems that recordings do not start and their viewing stalls.
This might be a transient phenomenon or not.
I have already sent an email to instruction@njit.edu.
It might be possible that you can download the recording and then start it
locally, if remote starting/watching does not work. This can be done
if you click on the download icon next to the recording's name.
I dont know how fast this will get resolved.
But there are Kaltura voiceovers as well,
plus the notes you might keep from class.
Webex has been doing maintenance; read comment in canvas main page, before
you head to a course.
-
(3/1 ) HW3 grading
HW3 has been graded with grades available in canvas. HW3 is viewable
in canvas and would remain so for 14 days.
-
(1/3) Exam1 instructions
Instructions for Exam 1 scheduled for Mar 11 have been posted in
section C of the course web-page. Read them in advance of the exam.
Also read Document 2 (canvas Announcements).
The exam will cover material drawn from the textbook as specified on
the cover pages of Subjects 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. It also includes material
not in the textbook that draws from Subject 8 pages 36-56.
-
(2/24) HW2 grading
HW2 has been graded and grades and the HW released in canvas. A solution
key is available in section C.
-
(2/16) HW 2 weird typing and typos?
Around problem 3 you might see a $3 \cdot 5$ or $3 \times 5$
or $3x5$ or $3.5$. All of these indicate the product of two integers, 3 and 5,
in this case. (BTW there is also a $3n$ or $5n$ where the operator is missing.)
Note just in case that $5^6$ or $5**6$ or $pow(5,6)$ mean 5 raised to the sixth
power.
In another problem the keys are -1,0,+1 yet later on that problem talks
about minus two. That's a typo for minus one (and if you see a plus two,
likewise).
-
(2/8) HW 1 grading
The grading is over. Grades are available in canvas;
HW1 was setup as a canvas quiz so your answers and corrections would
be visible in canvas for two weeks. Record things as needed.
It was graded by the course assistant. Note that Exam 2 is graded by
the instructor only; Exam 1 will be graded by the instructor, the assistant,
and canvas.
Grading wise, answers for questions 5-8 can be found or derived from the
discussion of Document 3.
-
(2/5) HW 2
The HW will be posted (published) on Monday 2/8 ahead of schedule.
Moreover you are given one extra day to complete it, if either the Lunar
New Year or Valentine's day celebrations keep you busy
(or you have a superbowl hangover)!
-
(2/5) Deviation from schedule in class
Next week I am planning to complete Subject 2, then do Subject 3 and
from Subject 8 the part related to PrP Option 2. Then I will move to
Subject 4 (and thus PrP Option 1).
-
(2/5) HW1
For Questions 5-8, answers are already in Document 3; read Document 3.
-
(2/5) Webex Recordings
All uptodate in Canvas Modules, as of the third week of classes.
-
(1/29) Webex Recordings
All uptodate as of second week of classes in Canvas Modules.
-
(2/1), (1/29), (1/28), (1/27), (1/25), (1/22)
Verification of Presence: Banner
Students who completed the VoP have had their presence recorded into Banner.
-
(1/21) ALERT 11:56am ALERT
At around 11:55am I had some connectivity problems: course web-page
was not available from within NJIT, I could not reach njit.webex.com.
The course web page might also be not accessible from inside NJIT.
Go to GOOGLE type CS610 and click on the first link to go to it.
However njit.webex.com is still not working at 11:59am. I might
be able to start a meeting though. You might have problems to connect.
I cannot read my email as of 12:00PM (noon-time).
Things seem to be working or recovering ...
-
(1/21) HW1 posted ahead of syllabus date
HW1 has been published. According to the Syllabus (Handout 1) it was
supposed to be published next week. It was published earlier to facilitate
a demonstration in Canvas. It tests or refreshes background course
prerequisite materialy anyway. All Homeworks and Exam are in Canvas Quizzes
and are done online (in canvas).
-
(1/21) Verification of Presence (VoP)
It is to be published at 12:30. Do not rush to complete it before class.
Read instructions (related to Document 0, Handout 1, and Section B of the
course web-page).
-
(1/21) Potential Typo?
If you see a reference to 'Handout 3' that does not make sense to you,
replace it with 'Document 3' and it might make sense. Rarely, do the
opposite.
-
(1/13) Accessibility issues fixed (I think)
Accessibility issues related to section B have been fixed.
They had to do with access control list permissions beyond my initial control.
-
Are you a current (Fall 2020) or previous semester student?
Go to the appropriate semester's page through the Previous
offering link.
-
(12/28) NO past announcements
The semester has not started yet.
