WITH EXCESS PRP points the average is 673. THE RULES BELOW DO NOT APPLY TO FALL 2020 or later as structure of the course has changed. They are however indicative of the rules that will be used. ------------------------------------------------------------ RULE 1. INACTIVE Final Exams at 25% of 333 = 83.25 receive an automatic F per Syllabus(Handout 1). If letter grade is assigned here it is final; for all other cases it will involve RULE 2 and ADJUSTMENTS 1-3. RULE 2. Students are then groupped 'curve like' per half of standard deviation (usually 70pts). Final Letter grades are decided for the remaining non-RULE 1 students. ADJUSTMENT-1 RULE-2 students below 500 are added excess points to determine if they can be assigned a C. ADJUSTMENT-2 RULE-2 students with (< 500 pts) but with points at least 50% of top student's points and a Final at MORE than 50% of top Final exam grade also get a C even if they have < 500 pts. ADJUSTMENT-3 Students at more than 500 points use excess points provided Final Exam grade is around the level of the Exam 3 grade of students in the upper group. A violation (or violations) of the Collaboration policy of the course adjust the final letter grade appropriately. Definitions Definitions =========== =========== N = number of students taking the exam Interval = 0 to maxpoints possible for exam (as in Handout 1) Average = Sum of exam grades divided by N Stand Deviation = Shows dispersion of grades. Roughly, 2/3 of the grades are within 37 +/- 12 , and 95% within 37 +/- 2*12 if ave is 37 and std 12 Median = Half of the students got that much or less (and half, more than that).
