   Minutes of Standards Commitee Meeting.

1. Meeting started at 2:45pm
2. Present: Barry Cohen, 
            Vincent Oria, 
            Andrew Sohn 
            Alex Gerbessiotis (chairing the meeting).
3. Agenda Items:  
    a. Discussed working document on Grading standards.
       The updated Word document is attached.
       Major changes include:
        - inclusion of Withrawals in grades distribution,
        - explicit reference to 100-level courses, and
        - enforcement issues.
    b. Qualification of instructors for graduate-level courses.
       The issue was discussed but no decision was taken.
       It was suggested that we ought to examine first the effect
       changes might have in current teaching assignments.
    c. High-school programming contest.
       - It was suggested that every year the organizers of the
         contest for that year and the following one be 
         named by the Department.
       - Both of them should participate in the Departmental 
         high-school programming contest.
       - The current organizer could maintain a journal of
         activities and pass this journal to the next organizer.
       - A student assistant should also be named in advance
         for the following year's contest. That student could
         benefit by interacting with the current year's student
         assistant. A student assistant gets a benefit in terms 
         of a teaching assignment reduction in the spring semester 
         of the year the competition it is held.
   
4. Grading standards will be discussed in the retreat meeting 
   scheduled for Dec 14, 2006.
