Standards Committee ******************** AY : 2006-2007 Meeting: Sixth Date : February 7, 2007 Time : 3:10-4:55pm Place : Small Conf Room GITC 441x. ************************************* Minutes of Standards Commitee Meeting. by Alex Gerbessiotis ************************************** -------------------------------------- 1. Meeting started at 3:10pm 2. Present: Barry Cohen Vincent Oria Andrew Sohn Alex Gerbessiotis (chairing the meeting). 3. Agenda Items: a. High School Programming Contest b. CS Dept Budgetary issues c. Course listing. 4. High School Programming Contest (HSPC). i. It was suggested that in the first Departmental meeting of the AY in Sep, the Department form an HSPC committee with members that include both - the current event organizer (CEO) (current AY) - the future event organizer (FEO) (following AY) FEO's participation will help him/her in dealing with the following year's organizational details ii. A PhD student assistant to CEO (call him phd-CEO) be selected and also an assistant to FEO. The phd-CEO will receive one semester full-release from other duties in the spring semester of the academic year AY his CEO is running the event. iii. The CEO, starting with Vincent Oria (AY 2006/2007), will maintain a detailed log/diary of activities related to the HSPC event. 5. Budget of the CS Department. i. It has been suggested that a meeting of the Department in late spring discuss budgetary issues relevant to the budget of the following academic year and/or ii. The Deparment request 1% of the tuition brought in by its students, that is, approximately $100 per enrolled student. iii. The Department request from the University that 5% of the MDTC (indirect costs) charged on grants be given to the Department. For a $200,000 grants 5% of the MDTC costs is roughly $3,000, a not very significant amount. 6. Course listings. The faculty have been asked in various times to contibute haphazardly a variety of course syllabi in various formats such as: UCRC (undergrad), GSD (grad), ABET, Provost-suggested. A. Bell spends plenty of time maintaining duplicate information through a system that displays such information in a very poor unformatted form. Because update of course material may take several days, there are periods of time that the posted information is inaccurate or out-of-date. For example witness the state of ccs.njit.edu/abet/cs We discussed the issue of course listing and we agreed that the following simplified process MIGHT be more helpful. i. The Department will decide and publicize a list of course coordinators for all undergraduate (ABET-related work has already established this) and graduate courses (list is obsolete). This can be done separately or in conjunction with item ii below. ii. Archival listing of course information relevant to the Department and its faculty. - A brief listing of courses, with one "line" of information per course of a format approaching the following example. CS 435 TITLE COORDINATOR-NAME UCRC-SYLL ABET-SYLL DATE where CS 435 is the number of the course linked to the Univ. Catalog entry TITLE is the title as in the catalog COORDINATOR-NAME is the last name of the coordinator with a link to his/her web/course-page UCRC-SYLL is the UCRC-approved course information in .doc or .pdf ABET-SYLL is the ABET-style course information. DATE is a link to text-based log that list all changes made to different elements of the course. The area storing this information can be password-protected. The information in this area will be rarely updated and be relatively stable. It will also serve as an repository of documents in electronic form readily available to the Department and its faculty. iii. Listing of course information for the benefit of our students. We could use the current system with the following simplifications For every course/section a link to the instructor's course page and the copy of the syllabus stored by the CS XYZ-002 INSTRUCTOR-NAME INTRUCTOR-COURSEPAGE SYLLABUS where CS XYZ-002 : is the course number/section with a link to the University entry for the course INSTRUCTOR-NAME: is the name of the instructor with a link to his/her web-page. INSTRUCTOR-COURSEPAGE: link to her/his web-page for the course. SYLLABUS : a link to a locally stored copy of the syllabus of the course (Provost's format) that the instructor handed out to his class. It can be a .doc or .pdf document. The proposed system will simplify the listing to what is available throught the main page at say, http://web.njit.edu/cs/cs_courses/index.php?d=ug&sem=SPRING_2007 iv. Course materials for the benefit of our students. For the required courses (undergrad and graduate) provide a list of exams or additional instructional material (eg videos, notes, etc). The following format is originally proposed. CS XYZ FINAL-EXAM-Fall-2006 MIDTERM-EXAM-Fall-2006 FINAL-EXAM-Spring-2006 FINAL-EXAM-Fall-2005 MIDTERM-EXAM-Fall-2005 6. Discussion concluded at 3:55pm. Minutes compiled by Alex. Gerbessiotis.
