II. CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS AND FUTURE PLANS

Social Capital in Business Incubation

The effectiveness of startup incubators has been found to be inconclusive, challenging the prevalent thought that their social capital is important to startup success and its diffusion is prominent in high-density ecosystems.  I study the dynamics of such entrepreneurial critical masses, and develop and empirically evaluate startup survival models that explicitly represent the above attributes of firms and ecosystems with the aim to resolve this contradiction and discover ways to improve the effectiveness of incubators, at both the firm and regional levels.

Cross-Cultural Entrepreneurship Education

The globalization of entrepreneurship education requires instructors to understand, and adjust curriculum for, cultural disparities.  Because entrepreneurship has also become interdisciplinary, instructors must account for similar disparities between students from different disciplines.  I model and empirically test the effects of culture on entrepreneurial disposition, and seek to discover methods of improving entrepreneurship education that accounts for these effects.

m-Health

The term m-Health refers to the assets and practice of healthcare delivered through mobile devices.  It resides at the convergence of cell phone adoption, sensors, and big data for both individualized healthcare and public/population health.  One of the main challenges to m-Health is the lack of interoperability between its components.  I evaluate the market impact of interoperability, and develop technological and policy solutions that promote m-Health, and test them in real-world settings (including the Dominican Republic, the construction site of the Albert Dorman Honors College, and New Jersey during hurricane Sandy).

B. Curriculum Development

I am responsible for the curricular aspect of the entrepreneurship program at NJIT, in particular the undergraduate major and minor in entrepreneurship, and the graduate major and certificate in entrepreneurship.  I track key performance indicators of this program, including the KPIs required by the Princeton Review of Entrepreneurship Education Programs (Table 2).

The curriculum of all my courses is newly developed.  Table 1 identifies the courses I developed and the first term I offered each new course (column labelled “New”).  MGMT390-IDS, MGMT640, ENTR430, ENTR490, and ENTR725  are new courses, and I have redesigned ENTR410 and MGMT680 (both periodically taught prior to my coming to NJIT).  The new curriculum focuses on entrepreneurial strategy, contextual experiential learning, and on the tools of the entrepreneur (in particular for business model validation, funding, and growth).

I have introduced several assets into my courses in ways that appeal to the students and improve the overall experience.

1.     Students meet companies in the Enterprise Development Center (EDC) and use them as case studies.  MGMT680 students work closely with assigned EDC companies thought the semester.

2.     Students use a financial model simulator to evaluate their business strategies (see section V.F Software Development and Improvement).

3.     Students seeking to develop demonstration models of their innovations have access to the MTSM 3D printer.  Such students typically develop a virtual 3D model of their innovation with which to generate images; these models lend themselves to 3D printing.

F. Software Development and Improvement

On August 2011, I downloaded a financial modelling spreadsheet from SCORE (previously the Service Corps of Retired Executives) for use in ENTR410 and later in MGMT640.  Since then, I have released fourteen revisions that fix errors and improved its utility in our classrooms, and donated these revisions back to SCORE.  Some of the improvements are listed below.

Original Financial Model Spreadsheet

Revised Financial Model Spreadsheet

Pro-forma financials generated for three years

Five year time horizon accommodates longer pre-revenue R&D

Fixed recurring expenses

Recurring expenses can be changed to model strategic transitions

Revenue only from sales

Revenue also possible from grants and subsidies

Number of employees set at launch of startup

Number of employees can be changed year-to-year

No graphical display

Interactive plots display break-even points, capacity saturation, etc.
