You will learn in this course how firms determine investment, financing,
and dividend policy decisions, i.e., the basic tenets of funding and operating
an enterprise, in the financial marketplace. The successful completion of this
course will give you a solid understanding of the practice and theory of financial
management, it will academically prepare you to take advance courses in finance.
Some topics to be covered in this course are: financial markets, asset valuation
models, statistical risk-return analysis, portfolio theory, capital budgeting,
financing decisions and market efficiency. These topics are very interesting
and will equip you with analytical tools that will be helpful to you throughout
your professional career. These topics may even peak your interest in the field
so that you may want to consider a career in financial management.
The contemporary field of financial management has developed into a highly
specialized area that employs the tools of other functional areas of
business administration. This course will be taught on an applied-practical
and theoretical level. Students are to expect extensive applied assignments
on a weekly basis. Students are required to have a working knowledge of
an electronic spreadsheet.
Students should have the required academic background to take this graduate
course; a basic knowledge of accounting, economics and elementary statistics
are needed. Students are advised to use their textbooks in these courses
as supplements when needed. Finally, students must be highly disciplined
and motivated; this is a demanding course, it requires good qualitative
and quantitative skills.
