Transportation

Transportation is very important for the downtown Jersey City area. If it weren't for the PATH train coming through Jersey City, there would be very little interest in this area for development. Jersey City has an impressive transportation system: subways, trains, buses and taxis. In fact, there are two subway systems: PATH system and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail; neighboring Hoboken serves as the major train station; there are NJ Transit buses as well as privately owned smaller buses; and a set of independent privately owned taxi services. Furthermore, the Holland Tunnel connects Jersey City and Downtown Manhattan. The Holland Tunnel connects to the major highways that connect to all points in the nation.

As the community grows in population, transportation needs to meet this. So far, the Jersey City officials have done an impressive job of keeping up. For example, the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail is extending further north to North Bergen. The Holland Tunnel is under constant watch for Terrorism, thus increasing traffic but also increasing safety. There have been talks of extending the PATH system, but nothing has happened as of now.
