Homework Handout #11

11.01: How hot would a cloud of material become falling into a black hole?  If it emitted as a blackbody at what wavelength would it peak?  (Ignore gravitational redshifts.)

11.02: Calculate the tidal forces between the head and feet of a person falling into a black hole of 10 solar masses (that is, at the radius of the event horizon).  Repeat your calculation for a black hole of one million solar masses.  Repeat for a black hole of one billion solar masses.  [Hint: Save yourself some work by writing the latter two calculations in units of the first result.  Pick reasonable values for the parameters of the person.]
