Academic Biography for Michael Halper



Michael Halper received his Ph.D. in computer science from New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT).  Currently, he is Associate Chair for Information Technology and Professor in the Department of Informatics at NJIT.  He is also a member of NJIT's SABOC.  Dr. Halper's research interests include conceptual and object-oriented data modeling, part-whole modeling, knowledge representation, and ontologies.  He worked on the OOHVR project---funded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Advanced Technology Program---to model controlled terminologies using OODB technology.  Dr. Halper was Co-PI on a National Library of Medicine (NLM) grant that focused on partitioning and abstraction techniques for auditing and extending the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS).  He was also supported by the NLM on a grant focusing on the modeling and abstraction of medical ontologies such as SNOMED CT.  Dr. Halper most recently was funded by the National Cancer Institute (part of the NIH) to work on quality assurance (QA) of families of biomedical ontologies. Dr. Halper's work has also been supported by the New Jersey Commission on Science and Technology.  He has had numerous papers in international journals, conferences, and workshops.  Dr. Halper is a member of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.
