ΣΞ Chapter @ NJIT

Welcome to Sigma Xi - New Jersey Institute of Technology Chapter

Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society is the international honor society of science and engineering. One of the oldest and largest scientific organizations in the world, Sigma Xi has a distinguished history of service to science and society for more than one hundred and twenty five years. Scientists and engineers, whose research spans the disciplines of science and technology, comprise the membership of the Society.

Nominations are invited for election of new associate members and full members, as well as for promotion from associate to full membership.

Associate membership is granted to individuals engaged in research, demonstrating potential for future research activity. Generally, associate membership is granted to promising graduate students completing their thesis work. Associate membership can also be granted to outstanding undergraduate students involved in research projects. Full membership is granted to researchers with established publication records. For more information about Sigma Xi membership qualifications, click here.

Candidates for full or associate membership must be nominated. For information about who can nominate and the procedures of obtaining and submitting nomination forms, click here. The completed nomination forms should be submitted, preferably in electronic form, to Dr. Edwin Hou at hou@njit.edu, whom you may also contact for any question. They will then be reviewed for election by the Chapter Board.

Coded Bias: A conversation with filmmaker Shalini Kantayya

Shalini Kantayya’s CODED BIAS (2020) follows MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini in her ground-breaking investigation of how algorithms repeat the unconscious prejudices of their programmers. After discovering that facial recognition technologies fail to see dark-skinned faces accurately, Buolamwini pushes for the first-ever U.S. legislation to protect against bias in the algorithms that impact us all. Exploring the shadow side of AI, CODED BIAS foregrounds the work of women who have revealed the inextricable ties between technology and civil rights.

CODED BIAS will be available to stream for free prior to the event. The film is also available on Netflix.
